So this is from 2013 which means it is prior to our big TV deal. So why do we still act like we are the poor boys in town? I hope they keep winning, but there was no reason why we couldn't add a big RH bat this off season. At least money should not have been the reason.

This thread discusses the issue as well, but the numbers are slightly different.

Here's the Forbes article:

The Business Of Baseball - Forbes

The M's are in the top 10 of MLB Teams for growth in value. And like you said, the new media deal adds a guaranteed at least $100 million/year for the next 20 years...and it will likely yield significantly more than that.

Here's a little article that questions what the M's front office will choose to do with all of this revenue:

I'm still holding out hope they bring Morales back. It is still early, but I haven't been impressed with Corey Hart so far.

Me either. He seems to be rolling his wrists a lot as you can see that ball spinning downward off his bat. I am just guessing he is doing this because he may not be 100% confident in his knees so he is using more wrist. Did they really think he could play OF this year? WOW!

And Mariners are still cheap.

The Mariners are hard to truly calculate because they now basically own Root Sports. Their recent deals with DirectTV and Dish will feed billions into the org in the decade to come. And because of the majority ownership stake of the Mariners is now basically in an estate status with Nintendo of USA as the owner, it makes it even more difficult to get real valuation numbers out of them.

after signing one good player (cano) to a deal that will probably end up either revenue positive or revenue neutral at the very least (like with felix), they supplemented it with bargain basement signings to address the massive RHB and outfield problems.

combine that with the guaranteed billions in revenue through root and other media deals, and sadly i think it's pretty clear that articulating a winning team isn't high on the priority list for nintendo and the front office they hired.

i'm happy as anybody about the start to the season, but the team's deficiencies lead me to believe it's ephemeral.
