NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball said all 30 teams will start the 2019 season on March 28, the earliest Opening Day in history, excluding international openers.

The previous earliest Opening Day was March 29 of this year.


MLB released the 2019 schedule Wednesday. It will begin with the opening series in Japan between the Seattle Mariners and host Oakland Athletics at the Tokyo Dome on March 20-21.

The 2019 season will be the second under the scheduling format agreed to as part of the 2017-2021 basic agreement. That format adds an additional weekend at the beginning of the season and gives each team three to four additional off days throughout the season to provide added rest and opportunities for rescheduling.

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will play the first-ever MLB games in Europe -- June 29-30 in London.

There will be six games played at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, starting with spring training games between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks on March 9-10.

In the regular season, the Cincinnati Reds will host the St. Louis Cardinals on April 13-14, and the Los Angeles Angels will play the Houston Astros on May 4-5.

They were WAY before our time...I just know about them from some reading I did a while back. There was a pretty famous game between the old NY Giants and the Chicago White Sox in Chelsea in 1918. Right before the Black Sox scandal

Huh. Never heard of that one. I know they used to do barnstorming tours to the far east back in the 20s and 30s, but wasn't aware they were traveling internationally back in the 'teens.

Baseball in London will appeal to Mainlanders, mostly Dutch and Germans, where the game has some roots because of US military history. There is some baseball in Sweden. Almost none in UK. If they draw crowds, it will be Mainlanders who don't need a primer on how the game is played.

They said that about the NFL, and it's done okay in avoiding that.

As for London, my brother would be the better person to ask for ideas on places to go, but food wise, I would recommend a Fish and chip place unimaginatively named Fish! in Borough Market near London Bridge. That's nowhere near London Stadium though.

Is there a dome in London or is at that new stadium that is running massively behind schedule? Seems dumb to do a series where there is a high probability that it gets rained out.
