Ozzie is my guess. His lengthy playing career as well as being manager for the only WS winner in over 100 years.

Has Frank's number been officially retired? I know his number has never been worn by another Sox player since he left, but I'm not sure it has been officially retired. If not, his should be next and asap at that. Next in line for me would be Mark Buehrle.

Minnie's jersey was retired back in '83.

Yeah, 35 is definitely retired. Buehrle is also retired.

This is a tough call. The next retired number may currently be playing now and is nowhere near retirement or accruing the stats and local stardom needed. Sale’s number won’t be retired. There’s currently a void.

You’re probably right. Can’t think of another player of import that hasn’t already been retired.

After digging thru some White Sox history...............how about these players:

Red Faber: 254 wins - all with the White Sox
Ed Walsh: 195 wins - all with the White Sox
Shoeless Joe: in just 5.5 seasons with the Sox, .340 BA, 829 hits, .906 OPS
Eddie Collins : in 12 years with the Sox: .331 BA, 2007 hits, .849 OPS

NONE of these historic players with such insane stats have their jerseys retired? The one exception I could possibly see is Shoeless Joe due to the Black Sox scandal, but those other three?

I read recently - Eddie Collins who was on the Black sox - and had a terrible WS - was never considered in on the fix because the other players considered him too straight (or an asshole).

like so many things ... retiring numbers is getting out of hand. how soon before a team runs out of numbers?

Haha good point. Players will have to start wearing numbers like 99 like Manny Ramirez did with the Dodgers.

Yeah, the Bears have had to bring back retired numbers because there's too many. Notably, there's not enough numbers for the LB's. As the Bears have had a slew inducted into the HOF.

I don't think it's as big of a problem in the MLB or NBA where any position can wear any number 1-99. Where as the NFL allots numbers to certain positions (i.e. QB's can only wear 1-19).

Manny Ramirez also wore 99 with us.

Although, I'd rather forget that ever happened :L

Did Joe Jackson, Ed Walsh or Eddie Collins have a number in Chicago?

Wasnt until the 30's that every team wore them. Cobb didn't wear one in detroit and he finished his career in Philly with Eddie. And I've never seen a number attributed to him there either.

Walsh and Jackson I assume didn't have a number Collins might've. Idk.

I’ll never forget his majestic HR on halfway to St. Patrick’s day.

Yeah, I remember being pissed too. It was like "Ah, yeah! Now that we're 6 games back with 10 days left in the season you hit a moon shot. Thanks, Manny!"
