Michael Jordan says Hornets title would top six Bulls rings

What would an NBA title for the Hornets mean to team owner Michael Jordan?

In an ESPN interview that aired on the eve of the 2014-15 NBA season's opener, Jordan said a seventh ring would be more gratifying than the previous six.

"I'm always dreaming about that seventh ring. Always," Jordan said. "The six that I actually won, I impacted from a whole different angle. Now I'm impacting from a totally different perspective and it's not as much fun, but it's a lot harder."

Jordan covered a number of other topics in the wide-ranging interview, including his pitch to free agent Lance Stephenson this summer. And yes, LeBron James had a lot to do with it.

"We need someone that can compete against LeBron, simple as that," Jordan said. "I don't know if the antics were one of those things, but the thing was 'I love the way you competed against LeBron' and to me that's a plus.

"if you only get out of the East, you want to get past Cleveland — at the time it was miami — you've got to beat LeBron, so we're willing to take a gamble with you if you're willing to take a gamble with us."

Jordan also told Rovell he never thought, as an owner, he'd be able to call free agents and easily convince them to play for his team.

It's part of what Jordan finds to be the toughest part of ownership: Not being able to impact the game as he once did during his playing days.

"I played this game for a long time and I always took criticism in a way that's going to make me better as a basketball player and I can affect the game," Jordan said. "Here, I can't do that other than talking to my different employees or talking to my coaches or the players.

"That's one voice removed from activity, where as [a player] I didn't have to talk anyone, I could go do it. It's unbelievably hard, from a competitor that hates to lose, has a voice and opinion that is so strong and held myself to a very high standard."
