Griffin contract another gauge in Goldson talks

On Tuesday, Griffin agreed with the Titans on a five-year extension that ESPN reports is worth $35 million, including $15 million guaranteed.

Those numbers are almost identical to the figure I've heard from league sources in connection with a possible multi-year deal for Goldson. The sides continue to be in contact about working out a long-term contract.

A year ago when Goldson was on the open market, he was seeking a contract worth $8 million annually -- the same amount the San Diego Chargers paid to re-sign Eric Weddle -- sources said. It's not believed that his asking price has come down after he made his first Pro Bowl, fired agent Drew Rosenhaus and hired high-powered CAA for representation.

Jenkins and the 49ers are expected to eventually agree on a four-year, $6.947 million contract with a $3.49 million signing bonus, a source told CSNBayArea.com. The hold-up is likely the amount of guaranteed money. Based on the deals already signed, Jenkins' first three years of salary are likely to be guaranteed.

Update on Goldson negotiations
11:41AM ET
Dashon Goldson | 49ers

As with any franchise-tagged player who is unhappy with his current situation, San Francisco 49ers S Dashon Goldson has remained absent while the team goes through it's offseason program. There is a gap between what Goldson believes he's worth and what the team is willing to pay him for his services, and the two sides have until July 16 to sort that situation out; otherwise, Goldson's only option (if he wants to play in 2012) is to sign the one-year franchise tender.

In Goldson's view, he'd like a deal that pays him around $8 million per season -- similar to what Eric Weddle got from the San Diego Chargers -- but the Niners obviously haven't been willing to dole out such a contract to him. On Tuesday, the Tennessee Titans came to a five-year agreement with their franchise-tagged S, Michael Griffin, for $35 million, with $15 million guaranteed. According to what sources have revealed to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, that's "almost identical" to the figures being tossed around for a potential Goldson deal.

With less than a month to go before the deadline for a multi-year deal, the two sides will continue to try and hammer something out. The Griffin agreement could help those talks along.
