Entering a big league ballpark will be a bit like going through an airport by 2015.

Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers.

"This procedure, which results from MLB's continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB," baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Tuesday.

The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday that fans entering Safeco Field will have to walk through metal detectors starting with this year's opener.

Boston, the New York Mets, Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Francisco were among the teams that experimented with screening at times last year. Security gained more intense focus after three people were killed and more than 260 wounded in when two bombs were set off at the Boston Marathon finish line.

Don't ALL MLB Parks already have hand held metal detectors?

I know pretty much any sporting event in the NYC area is tight security, I know the Devils do metal detectors and pat down so this will be nothing new for me.

Yup because shootings and stabbings are a common problem at sporting events across the US. With the exception of California where Giants and or Dodgers fans will just beat you to death with their bare hands.

No. Only time I've ever went thru a security check in Detroit was '91. On account of Morris' first start vs The Tigers. Normally I get my ticket scanned by an old retired guy and that's it. Never have seen a security check in Cleveland, Milwaukee, Cincy or Wrigley either.

It depends where you go but it's common at NYC sporting events. I was a security guard at Shea Stadium and Madison Square Garden when I was in college back in he mid '00s, and we always had to search people coming into the stadium, whether by the metal detector wand or frisking. I know they do it at Yankee Stadium too.

Most of the time it was people trying to sneak in alcohol, but occasionally you'd get someone with a switchblade or something.

Did you guys pat people down? Or just use the wand? I've accidentally brought weed into NFL games before and that was with security. I assume this is more PR based than anything.(Only non-Midwest venues I've visited are Philly and Denver.) But the idea of being caught might also be enough of a deterrent to make some nut leave their weapon at home.

Both...at Shea, there were more security guards than wands, so if there were 5-6 guards at a gate, maybe 2-3 get wands and the others have to frisk dudes (women were directed to one of the guards with a wand, but there were at least 2 occasions I can remember where I couldn't tell whether a person was a dude or chick, so I wasn't sure whether to frisk or not :noidea:.

I do see the point of doing this, especially in a place like NYC or LA where you definitely have your fair share of characters. Whenever the Mets played the Phillies back then (probably not like that anymore since the rivalry isn't as heated), it seemed like there would always be multiple fights breaking out in the stadium between Met and Philly fans, so of course you wouldn't want a situation where a fan pulls a knife or gun out on someone (for safety and liability reasons).

DHS, a completely waste of tax money.

Well, not a complete waste.... It certainly could be run better, but the idea is good.

Bush II did a lot of things wrong, but I think he got this one right (the concept, at least)...

What exactly would you say is the idea/concept of DHS that you're commending?

The sharing of information between our various agencies would help...

The CIA, FBI, DOD, ATF, TFI, etc... They need to learn that we are all on the same team...

That couldn't have happened without the DHS?

They also need to all get on the right team in the first place. I wouldn't say that they're on "my team" at all.
