My guess is it is a retention bonus where if he is not fired or leaves before January XX, he gets paid the $400k bonus.

Might be written in as a bonus so if he gets fired, they're not on the hook for it like they would be with his salary.

That makes a lot more sense than just "bonus" without any criteria.

Still not worried. The majority of our classes don’t come from Michigan anyway. We get 3-5 kids from the state. In 2020 we had 4, 2019 we had 2. MSU might pull in a few more kids if they can improve in that arena, but I still think their fundamental issue is being MSU and not Michigan in the state; or MSU and not OSU in Ohio. Every surrounding state has a major power that isn’t them. I don’t think any coach, or position coach, is changing that; especially if they do shitty. Dantonio removed the new coaches ability to sing a first class, so they have to wait through an entire season, probably a bad one, to even get their first kids into the program.

I wouldn't be worried either, Mel Tucker usually doesn't stay in one place very long.

Being a Great Lakes guy, Tucker would certainly leave Michigan State for Ohio State and his Alma Mater, Wisconsin, but Paul Chryst and Ryan Day are probably not going anywhere for a quite a while, so as far as college jobs go, I think Tucker remains at MSU for a while....

    however....
If Tucker does well at Michigan State, methinks he'll bolt to the NFL in a heartbeat.

Beneath the surface this was a B1G over PAC 12 more than Sparty over Colorado. More accurately this was a B1G/ACC/SEC/Big 12 over PAC 12.

"The Pac-12 is on the brink. Want to talk competitive imbalance? Michigan State basically bought out Tucker's promise to remain at Colorado. And it did so because it could. A Big Ten school flexed. A Pac-12 counterpart winced. It's as simple as that."

"Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News has already calculated that each Big Ten school will make $139 million more than its Pac-12 counterpart over the next five years."

"But it's not just Big Ten money. Tucker made $2.4 million at Colorado. Alabama's mere recruiting budget, according to a recent report, is $2.6 million."

Fallout from Mel Tucker's move extends past Michigan State, Colorado to recruiting, the Pac-12 and beyond

I don’t get the point of the article though. They said the same thing when FSU overpaid for Willie Taggart. What has Tucker done that you can fault Colorado for not matching (if he even gave them a chance to)? Where have the successful Pac 12 coaches been bought out by, except us with Leach going to be 5th place in the SEC West? They have all left for the NFL. It’s

Michigan State's offense was anemic for the previous few years but their defense was solid.....

    so.....

While I certainly understand and agree with getting rid of all the existing Michigan State offensive coaches, one would think that Mel Tucker should retain a couple MSU defensive assistants, but apparently he is purging the entire Spartan coaching staff.

Spring football is coming soon, and at this point the pickings for assistants are probably pretty slim.

    Hmmm?

Most of those coaches were at USC, and USC is a destination job. Kelly left Oregon for the NFL, but Oregon is an exception to the typical P12 budget. Petersen certainly could’ve had offers, but everyone knew he had no interest in anything East of Montana, and it had nothing to do with budgets.

That said, Riley and Price both bolted when offered by Nebraska and Bama, respectively. This was in spite of Riley being a Corvallis native (though he did play at Bama) known for his affinity for OSU, and Price having spent a long tenure in Pullman.

Tucker is s DC, so he is likely to have his own defensive coaches in mind. We’re he an OC, I suspect he’d have left the defensive staff largely intact.

I would have liked to see Tressel stay but I understand the desire to bring in his own guys. Plus the defense took a step back last year and looked like trash giving up an additional 5 points per game.

Kelly left because he was about to be sanctioned and was hit with an 18mo show cause.

The point I got was that because of the discrepency in revenue from media contracts, etc, the B1G teams have so much of an advatange in money, they can afford to sling it around at an "iffy" hire like Tucker. And they can do it without risking future financial problems when it doesn't work out. Also, exactly what you said. Can't fault Colorado for not matching it since they feel they don't have such deep of pockets to pay for a guy that really hasn't proven to be worth that much to them....at least not yet IMHO.

I don't blame Sparty or Tucker. If Sparty thinks they have enough money to spend it like that and wants to...let 'em. And why wouldn't Tucker accept it?

Now if Tucker had gone 12-2, 13-1 for a few years and Colorado wasn't making an effort to match the Sparty offer...Even then, they'd have probably alread gone to their max...even if they might not afford it.

What gets me is Sparty has supposedly spent a lot on their scandal crap. If so, they've got even more money to throw around than people think.

Since we are so close to Spring football and Mel Tucker still canned the entire Michigan State coaching staff, including Mike Tressel, I'm going to assume Tucker has already received yes answers from the coaches he plans on bringing on board at MSU. Otherwise it's kinda risky letting everybody go at this time without having a new staff ready to come in for Spring ball in a few weeks.

In state recruiting, it won’t change much at all. The kids in state who went to Kentucky were kids who wanted to go to school out of state. The kid who went to Colorado was recruited by UM and both sides had interest until UM signed Charbonnet, and then UM dropped out of consideration.

The big get for Kentucky is Rogers. But it wasn’t beating UM and MSU for his commitment, as he stated early on, he wanted to go to school out of state. It was beating the other schools going after him. Kentucky was Rogers 1st offer, so that helped them, as well as having a few of his friends on the team.

In state recruiting is pretty simple when it comes to UM and MSU. You are brought up a fan of one team or the other. Majority of the state is UM, but MSU has pockets of fans in the flint area, traverse city, Etc.

You may sway the occasional recruit away, the the overwhelming majority are going to go to the school they grew up cheering for in state.

This is why it is so difficult to pull kids out of the South and why having a rich in state recruiting base is so important in CFB today

Why are people going so gaga over this guy? An ace recruiter who grabs a bunch of 3* and a few 4* from Ohio here and there?

You do realize how difficult it is to get decent players to go to Kentucky, right? We are talking about football, not basketball.
