Sanu will catch 25-30 down the stretch if they allow him to.

I'm not really sure why the concept of any Gaffney, Simpson, etc being better than Binns and Tate (combined) and would have been better in the first half of the season is so difficult to understand.

That plus the fact that there's no telling what either of those guys would have put up in THIS offense opposite Green.

I think the fact that Sanu only has 11 catches on the season pretty much justifies the concern about lack of a 2nd receiver. Those of us that argued for a veteran continuously stated that Marvin would be too slow to incorporate a rookie into the program and would instead rely on two guys that shouldn't be on the field. Did this not happen? Did we not line up against Miami and Cleveland with bums (Binns and Tate) across from AJ? It took until the Pittsburgh game for Marvin to relent and start a rookie - Unfortunately, Jones got hurt on the first play opening the door for Sanu the next week.

Point remains -- Anyone that thought a rookie was going to solve the problem in the early season doesn't follow Marvin Lewis.

In Sanu's case not being a really good practice player gave Marvin all the reason he needed to hold him back. The results on the field certainly justify playing him, and had he gotten a chance earlier he may have caused them to win another game, say, the Miami or Cleveland loss. I was all for a veteran #2 to start the season, as long as his name wasn't Jerome Simpson. I think the season he has had with the Vikes was just about what I expected.

Well...being that the facts prove otherwise, I don't know why I would think that.

Gaffney didn't play until 10/28 (the 1st half of the season). And...apparently if we really want Mr. Gaffney, he is available. He was cut by the Dolphins (his second team in less than six months) hours ago.

Dolphins waive Jabar Gaffney to make room for TE - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Jerome Simpson was suspended for the first 3 games of the season. Not much of an impact felt with him not on the field. Plus, I'd be willing to bet that he would have needed another few weeks to get the offense back down. History proves he ain't no quick learner.

And for what actually happened over the course of the first 8 games:

Tate/Binns: 24 catches 298 yards and 2 TD's

Those two provided enough buffer until the rooks were ready to go.

It's not like Gaffney and Simpson were the only receivers on the market -- Plenty of other guys were available and plenty of other guys changed teams.

My only point is that the Bengals went into the season without a good plan at 2nd receiver. Sanu or Jones would have been fine. Tate and Binns were substandard. Yes, Binns had his moments - His catch and run in DC was nice. But Dalton was definitely limited in two key games that will come back to haunt us if we do make a run this season..... I thought having a veteran as a second option would have helped and I still feel that way.

Glad to see Sanu in action now. Hopefully he keeps it up.

BTW -- When your second receiver options combine for less than 300 yards in 8 games, that is not getting the job done. It makes it even worse considering that the 2nd receiver for the Bengals benefits from playing across from one of the best receivers in the game.

Of this group, the only one who has made any impact at all has been Jacoby Jones as a returner and #3 receiver. Burress finally got a job this week, we'll see what he can do until Brown gets healthy I suppose. He actually could work out since his skill set is so different from the Steelers' other receivers.

Why the 'Z' at the end of news?

Also, the Bengals approach to the #2 was extremely ill advised. Unless they have somebody that is clairvoyant on the staff, there was no way of knowing which WR's would be available in any round and more importantly if they would be any good. Who knows, maybe their plan was to take Michael Floyd at 17. The point is that a mid tier stop gap guy should have been a no-brainer. A guy like Manningham could've produced right away and given you a buffer while the rookies (as they were no doubt taking a WR somewhere) developed.

As far as Simpson goes, after they passed on Manningham, etc I was all for brining him back. If you look at his #'s, in the last 16 regular season games he played in as a Bengal he had roughly 1000 yds recieving and 7 TDs. We all know Rome struggles to adjust to new schemes...I think if he would've stayed he'd of hit the ground running and had the benefit of playing opposite AJ. There is no doubt that of Rome, Binns, Tate and Sanu that he is the only viable deep threat of the bunch. He could've kept defenses honest where the others cannot.

That being said I liked the picks of Sanu and Jones and think they will both be good players and compliment each other well. I'm glad to see Sanu getting on the field and producing.

One of Jones or Sanu will be a complete bust. There's just not enough balls to go around for AJ, Gresham, RB's, etc....not in this offense.

I was all for bringing someone in. However Jabar Gaffney would have been a complete waste of money.

Jones and Sanu are actually pretty talented, and they've gotten involved rather soon for rookie WRs, to say at this point, that they are busts is ignorant. Now, one of them might end up going to another team, as there's only so much room, but, it would be nice if the Bengals planned for injuries.

It was time to move on from Simpson. with the Bengals being a suprise playoff team last yr it's easy to forget how badly he fucked up off the field. no reason to give a person like that a new contract...

Green looks like a HOF talent. Gresham is inconsistent, but he can be a weapon.. I liked the idea of rebuiling the passing game with young players rather than signing a veteran #2.. Let them grow with Dalton..

Sanu catches everything near him, including, and most importantly, in a crowd. He's going to become an excellent third down receiver too, as 3 of the 4 tds were third down plays. He also has the ability to break tackles and drag defenders for extra yards. Jones was going to be the man it appeared, but he got hurt and lost his opportunity for the time being.

I was dead wrong wanting Gaffney before the season, but in my defense he was coming off two productive years playing without a quarterback.
