Panthers' McCaffrey done for year due to ankle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss the remainder of the season with a left ankle sprain injury suffered in the first half of Sunday's 33-10 loss at Miami.

Initial X-rays on Sunday indicated the injury didn't appear to be too severe, coach Matt Rhule said Monday morning. But an MRI later in the morning revealed the damage was enough to place McCaffrey on season-ending injured reserve because of the time it would take to recover.

The Panthers (5-7) are on a bye this week, so McCaffrey will miss the final five regular-season games. He already has missed five games this season with a hamstring injury suffered in Week 3. He missed 13 games last season with multiple injuries.

Since signing a four-year, $64 million extension that made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history, McCaffrey will have played in only 10 of 33 games by the end of this season.

He needs to be used as a 3rd down specialist. I don't watch Panthers games, but lining him up and running him more than 10 times a game is foolish...he's not big and durable enough for that

I can relate, Seahawks can’t keep a RB healthy for anything lately … Penny has been nothing but riddled with injuries, in his comeback attempt he had 1 carry and now he’s injured again … Carson out for the year, he also can’t stay healthy … It’s maddening

Niner RBs need a lot of room in that boat.
RB1 (Mostert) played week 1 and then out for the year.
RB2 (Mitchell) has missed 4 games so far.
RB3 (Hasty) has missed 6 games
RB4 (Wilson) missed the first 8 games.

For 4 or 5 weeks this season, the Niners were without our best RB and 3 of our top 4. For 3 games, we trotted out our 5th stringer and a street FA. ...And we're a run-first, run-heavy offense.

He was very durable - until the Panthers ran him into the dirt!
At times he has been all the offense.

You can't take a 190lb guy and give him the ball 30 times a game and expect him to last. There are 220 to 270lb dudes that can run and hit with bad intent, and that smaller body type can't take that many hits and last...it's pretty simple physics

They claim he plays at 205, but yeah.

barry sanders weighed 203:suds:

Marshall Faulk was the exact same size as McCaffery as well. And he held up well with really similar runs/rec totals. The Panthers ARE overdoing McCaffery's usage. But not by a ton.
