If there are a lot of ABs to be had, obviously I'd rather have Ruf get a shot when he's healthy, but as a pinch hitter, this guy is a bargain at 1.5 million. .277/.333/.422 line coming off the bench before today. Very few players can do that.

Yeah, classic platoon player. People just expected too much because the Rangers drafted him in the first round. But we gave them our bad first round pick (Greg Golson) so I still think we got the better end of the deal.

Mayberry stunk up the place last year at .227 even when he got the chance to play. In these early games he looks like a guy who's found religion or the right cigarettes. We do need a guy who can play the outfield and hit when he's called on. If he can do that this year we'll be in great shape.

I'll say he's decent strictly against lefties. I don't want to see him starting against righties; I don't want him coming off the bench against righties; I don't want him in the outfield as a late inning defensive replacement. He doesn't "light" lefties up (last year in 100 at-bats he only had a .756 OPS against them) but he can become an asset in those situations, particularly against softer throwing lefties. I don't think there's any stat to prove this, but I guarantee you he has better stats against pitchers throwing 89-92 than those that throw 94 miles per hour and above. For whatever reason, he just isn't able to catch up to most fastballs north of 95- at least from what I've seen of him.

OK the fastball that he hit off Figueroa was somewhere around 95, so that's an exception, but for the most part, I think what I said is pretty accurate pertaining to Mayberry. I've always thought his swing was kind of long so that probably plays a part in it.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't smoking make him a worse player? I just think that it would damage his lungs and make it harder for him when running and swinging and the like.
