Love how Scott was able to trade back and get his 10 picks, agree tomorrow is where he sets himself apart. As for this pick I was also looking for a back to compliment Alf, a guy with breakaway speed and confirmed pass catching ability. But Jones can step in if Alf is hurt and offer a similar tupie of back. I'm not big on Redd so this is a solid addition.

Things I noticed were that the first guy rarely brings him down. He seems better than any back we have on the roster at picking up a blitz. We haven't had anyone who can do that consistently since Portis. Helu had the physicality to do it but always blew his assignment.

I still hope they find a spot for Redd jr., unless Scot drafts his speed back today. Remember Redd Jr. was a highly touted prospect at Penn St. The whole scandal there kinda set him back.

I like Redd too. I believe he'll get a chance to compete in camp. Honestly don't have much hope for Chris at this point. But maybe he'll surprise.

Third Round Pick Florida RB Matt Jones

After watching film on Matt Jones, the Marion Barber comparisons make a ton of sense. You rarely see this guy going backwards. He’s always squaring up and lowering his body to give hits rather than take them.

Matt Jones is also a pretty good catcher. He ran a ton of screens, flats and wheel routes at Florida. His experience in the power scheme should help his transition to the NFL a lot easier. I also like his ability to pass block. He isn’t Clinton Portis in that aspect, but he understands how to find the free rusher and block. There was a couple times on film that he looked almost like an offensive lineman sliding and providing help to the left tackle.

Lastly, Matt Jones ran a lot out of the Power O shutgun formation. I thought that would be a staple in Gruden’s offense with Robert Griffin III last year. However, he didn’t run that much at all. My expectation is that he’ll use that formation a lot more in 2015.

Instant analysis after the pick:

McCloughan quote on Matt Jones: “It’s part of the game, it’s not an exact science. We had him put in the third round for a long time, and you can always say it’d be nice to get a guy in the fourth or the fifth and take someone else, but at that point he was the best player on our board and I had absolutely no problem taking him in the third. It was funny, I talked to Frank Gore last night, and my first draft in San Fran we took him in the third and I said ‘If he’s half the player you are we’ll be OK.’ So I’m excited about Matt. He came in yesterday, you guys met him. He’s a big-body guy, he’s a physical player and he’s tough as crud.”
