Anyone else think it's absolutely bonkers that the Mariners and A's start their seasons before their spring training schedule is finished?

Its super weird. Just MLBs way of putting emphasis of promoting the game in Japan. Kinda hurts the fans and puts the players training schedule out of whack tho

already? that's WAY too early
Two games in Japan for the regular season then back to spring training again until April like the rest.
Weird shit by the MLB.

It's just flat out weird all right. Peel back all the layers and we'll see that money is somehow the basis for this. Wonder just how much money it's costing to send two teams, flight, room and board etc. to Tokyo?? Just another sweet move by the MLB organization I guess.

They did it in Australia a few year back. It is pretty ridiculous.

It's nice to have the M's season not being over by April. With this early series we won't even get that.

Absolutely!

I live in Arizona and look forward to Spring Training all year as it's the best time of a Mariners fans season; if you're able to get out for the games. The wife and I really enjoy the experience that a M's Spring Training game provides, and to have it cut in half for a dumb two game set in Tokyo pretty much blows.

We may hate it but seeing the buzz and the crowd drawn in Japan for the M's and A's... I'd say the MLB made the right business decision.

When is the game and how can I watch it?

West Coast fans will need to set their alarm clocks as first pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. in Tokyo, which translates to 2:35 a.m. PT/5:35 a.m. ET in the United States. Early-morning risers can catch the game live on ESPN. ROOT Sports will also replay the game in its Northwest markets at 6:35 p.m. PT.

The starting lineups

Mariners: Seattle has dramatically redone its roster, with just four starters returning from last year’s Opening Day lineup, and none of those is in the same defensive positions. Dee Gordon, Mitch Haniger, Ryon Healy and Ichiro have all moved into new spots. Of the rest of last year’s Opening Day starters, Robinson Cano and Jean Segura were traded, Nelson Cruz departed in free agency, Mike Marjama retired and Kyle Seager is injured. Even Felix Hernandez, who had started 10 straight Opening Days, has relinquished that role to 27-year-old lefty Marco Gonzales.

Lineup

1) Dee Gordon, 2B
2) Mitch Haniger, CF
3) Jay Bruce, 1B
4) Edwin Encarnacion, DH
5) Domingo Santana, LF
6) Omar Narvaez, C
7) Ryon Healy, 3B
8) Tim Beckham, SS
9) Ichiro Suzuki, RF

So why did Ichiro not play last year?

Saw the clip of him in right the other night and thought he was back playing in Japan. I mean, he was, but not in the way I was thinking.

Sure he can still throw, but have you seen him "hit?"

Same here. It's still opening day and I still have that bug for loving the start of regular season.

Hoping for good things from Marco this year too, so here goes.

Man, that throw was as ugly as anything I've seen.
