Not sure if the other thread really qualifies, or if there has been one posted yet, but here goes nothing.

First rumor to kick things off:

The Mariners continue to consider Phillies outfielder Ben Revere as the deadline approaches, Cafardo hears from a major league source. The M’s need a leadoff hitter and while his slash of .294/.335/.377 doesn’t make him the ideal guy for that, Revere does have 21 steals on the year. Earlier today we learned that the Pirates also have their eye on Revere. However, it’s worth noting that Revere is also dealing with hamstring issues at the moment and that could delay a possible trade.

The Dodgers, Blue Jays, Nationals and perhaps other teams had scouts on hand as Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma returned from a lat injury this week. Iwakuma could be a trade candidate, but Heyman notes that giving up four homers to the Tigers probably didn’t exactly increase his value.

If Jack Z's tenure has taught me anything it's that if Jack Z is interested in Ben Revere, Ben Revere must suck or at least will suck when he gets to Seattle. Also, that Jack will trade Carson Smith to get him because Jack trades his good relievers for replacement level position players.

I thought Erik Kratz was getting recalled after the break.

The Seattle Mariners may be close to starting off the July trading festivities by acquiring a catcher.

We may be close to our first significant July trade. The Seattle Mariners are close to trading for a catcher, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

It's interesting that it's the Mariners kicking off the trades, as they sit at 41-48 and sit 7.5 games back of the Angels in the AL West. But from a catching standpoint, there are a number of options that could interest the Mariners.

Catching options potentially available on trade market: Dioner Navarro, Geovany Soto, Jeff Mathis, Derek Norris, Nick Hundley, Mike McKenry

— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) July 15, 2015

Other catching options: Alex Avila, AJ Pierzynski, Christian Bethancourt, Wilin Rosario. #Mariners

The Mariners catching has been a sore spot offensively. Their everyday catcher Mike Zunino is sporting a .160 average to go with a .223 on-base percentage in 81 games. Jesus Sucre, backing him up, has hit .038 with a .038 on-base percentage in only 26 at-bats. Even if they acquire one of the B or C level catchers available, it would be an immediate upgrade from what they have been getting from the position this season.

He could potentially Bavasi this team again. He's just a Walker, Paxton, Marte, or Alex Jackson trade for a reliever away.

It seems like a catcher is on the Jack Z to do list. Not surprising really. Offensively Zunino is trash this season and if there is a guy out there that can catch more than Sucre and be better offensively than Zunino then its an upgrade a big upgrade, I just hope Jack Z stops being an idiot and doesn't screw the team during this trade deadline.

9:54am: The Mariners are close to striking a deal for a backstop, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports on Twitter. The report does not give any indication of the identities of the player or the other team involved in talks.

---------------------

Turns out he was being literal. M's just contracted with Play It Again Sports to purchase a slightly used backstop. It will be used at all home games during batting practice. It only cost them Marte who starts work there on Friday.

Just about anything would be an upgrade right about now.

Mariners catchers have put together a combined line of .148/.199/.258 this year, with 111 strikeouts.

I have to imagine that is historically bad.

Agreed... I'm a bit nervous at how desperate he could be at this point...
