Why is Gillespie on this team?
Isn't he like 30?
Does anything about his game fill a valuable role on this or any team?

Serious questions, all... I haven't seen a ton of him, but nothing looks impressive, and I don't think he's ever really shown the potential to be more than minor league fodder.

I can only guess: they don't want young guys sitting on the bench in Seattle when they can be starting in Tacoma. Older players who have settled into the utility role accept their place on the team and don't whine about playing time. Gillespie has to know by now that the only opportunity he is ever going to get at the MLB level will be as the 5th outfielder.

If you look at the lineup Tacoma is rolling out every night its easy to understand why guys like Miller, Romero and Gillespie are still here. There are not viable replacements in Tacoma. Its a mixture of guys who couldn't make it like (Quintero, Almonte, Montero) or guys who aren't ready or are just fodder like you said. That's why a move like Xavier Nady was made because a stop gap is needed. Its amazing how void of talent this organization is. In Jack we don't trust.:L

To be fair, he did have an OPS of 1.262 in 2011 (granted it was 7 PA)...

I still don't understand why Montero isn't up. He is the only true mold DH we have with Hart out. Will he succeed? Not sure, but it isn't like we have much to lose to find out.

Because Jack has to much pride and basically told the media Montero will never play for the Mariners again after showing up to spring training a whale. Admitting he is wrong is Jack's achilles heal.

M's are using DH as an ad hoc utility training ground for children.

That seems to be their plan this season for that position now that the amazing Hart and Morrison are out.

I don't want this to come across as antagonizing you at all because I agree with you. But for the jokers running this team, up is down, left is right, right is wrong, you get the picture.

Valid points and I get you and unfortunately have to agree with you. I wish you were wrong, but this is baseball as we know it as a M's fan.

I'm actually not sure if Montero is any form of upgrade over what we currently have at DH. I say that because he is only hitting .258 in Tacoma right now, which is especially bad considering the Rainiers are hitting .289 as a team lacking any considerable amount of talent.

I just don't know if Montero will actually be an upgrade at the plate for the Mariners. At least the other guys the Mariners have thrown out at DH can actually play a position or two out in the field and run faster than a snail. Montero's one and only asset is his bat, which I don't think is any upgrade over what the Mariners have been throwing out there.

Colossal failure does not even come close to describing Jesus Montero's major league career.

His Baseball America's prospect rating:
Pre-2009: Rated #38 Prospect
Pre-2010: Rated #4 Prospect
Pre-2011: Rated #3 Prospect
Pre-2012: Rated #6 Prospect

And now he doesn't even look like he could be any form of upgrade on an anemic Mariners lineup.

My point being that even an all or nothing DH is better than no contact, no power guys. Sometimes just the fear of giving up a homer makes pitchers make mistakes versus guys who combine for a .150 average with very little chance of getting it out of the infield let alone a homer.

Our combined DH's are hitting .196/.278./.317. Hard to believe Mt.-tero can be worse.

Yea I feel you need to at least give him a shot. I mean we ran out John Buck as the DH this week for crying out loud. With issues at SS and DH right now you essentially are rolling out a 7 man lineup every night. And thats probably being kind without getting into the other issues.

I said the same thing about Nick Franklin, and he was hitting 100+ points better than Montero in AAA.

But again, don't let minor league numbers fool you. Mt.-tero wouldn't have to hit for the same average like Franklin would in order to be effective. He would just have to make good contact every 15-18 AB's to drive one out to help as a DH.
