Bochy calls left field an open competition, says Rowand will stay in CF only | Extra Baggs

Bags mentions that the G's may be considering starting the season with Bum in Fresno to alleviate some of the roster crunch.

I do not like the idea of NOT having our best rotation out there from the git-go, but this may actually make sense. Bum still has options, and this would allow time to feature Nate (or RoRo) for a trade.

What do you guys think?

I think this is classic "there's no real news, so let's create some." Bum will be pitching April 6 at Petco, barring injury.

I highly doubt that any team is going to be suddenly swayed by watching a backup get sporadic PT over the first 3 or 4 weeks of the season. Rowand and Schierholtz are both reserve outfielders. Neither is going to suddenly show anything that they haven't already shown in the past. Left field may be an open competition, but Schierholtz ain't gonna win that competition. DuhRosa or Burrell will have that spot. Since Rowand is staying in center, he will back up Torres, who is a much better player.

Bottom line is that the Giants would be better served to trade Rowand now by agreeing to eat most of his remaining contract or trade Schierholtz now for some mid-level pitching prospect. But I suspect neither will happen because neither guy has any real value in the bigs.

I don't know about that; several teams will likely be interested in Nate in a couple of weeks. He's cheap, he's fast, he's got an arm...a good fourth/fifth OF option for a number of clubs. RoRo -- he's expensive, he's not fast anymore, and he's proven he's in decline. We'd have to eat most of his contract to move him.

Have to agree with CameronFrye here. Trade bait isn't established in ST and the early season. Rowand and Schierholtz are what you see. I don't believe that there is some hidden talent just waiting to emerge in either of these players. I also agree that they represent a minimal value to other teams which may be shopping. Schierholtz may be movable just because of his current salary status. I don't see any market for Rowand and his 12M. Basically the same situation with Zito. They would have to eat a substantial amout of their salary to move them. MadBum is a SP and I see no value at all to having him start the season in Fresno. If he was hurt and needed more rehab time then it wouyld be a different story.

I agree that Nate is fast and has a good arm. But none of the clubs that are going to be interested in what Schierholtz possesses are going to give the Giants anything of real value for him. What SF will end up getting is a young player who may or may not one day become a decent utility player or bullpen pitcher. At that point, they might as well just cut him and let him catch on with another team because the Giants farm system is currently stocked full of utility players and bullpen arms.

Exactly why teams should be able to trade draft picks, but that is an argument for another thread, I suspect...

I guess I disagree a little bit: I'm of the opinion that you don't let an asset just dissolve, you get something for it. Thus, Nate will be traded for a prospect and not simply let go. I agree it won't be a great prospect.
