Finally started his real career tonight. A lot of people were surprised at where his first assignment was - it was considered pretty aggressive for a guy his age - but he's through 4 innings already, 1 hit, 2 bb, 0 runs, 48 pitches. I also found an account from a guy who knows a guy who said that heredia is dominating.

Best prospect news all year.

that is awesome.
48 pitches and 4 innings. that is either overpowering or having his head in the game.

Read reports that he was sitting 88-91 with his FB, but was allowed to throw a lot of breaking pitches. Walked leadoff hitter in first and second innings, but other than that was pretty good. I expect not to many starts like this one, and a lot of starts where he hits his pitch limit before his inning limit.

But it is good news none the less.

88-91, wonder if he was taking it easy, if the gun was slow, or if he hasn't been stretched out yet.

The reports i read said the gun was accurate, he was just working on repeating his delevery. SC pitching coach said he was hitting 99 in extended, but was a bit wild as would be expected for a 17 year old throwing that hard. They had him dial it down and work on delivery and command before they let him ratchet it back up.

Yeah, I also read that his fastball had been reaching 99 mph..... which is several mph faster than the reports I read last year. Seems to be indicating that Pirate scouts were right when they suggested that he would add significant velocity as he "filled out." Apparently, he's up to 6-6, 205.

In case anyone missed it, Sanserino has a current article on "Big Baby" (his new nickname at SC) in the P-G:

'Big Baby' brings big arm to State College - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Less is more when you are throwing strikes... It is a nice feather to have in your cap later on.. the ability to reach back for a few extra ticks on the fastball... But if this guy ends up throwing 92-94 with good control he will be fine... There is no point in having this kid try to deliver the ball with maximum effort every time he throws and hurt himself... Calm him down... Teach him how to pitch... and then let him go...He is so young that he needs time to get stronger ...The pitch count, the inning count... and monitoring what he throws is a great idea... He has plenty of time... Let's not ruin this kid by rushing him.

They could be careful with this kid and still have him in the majors before he was 22....
