I can't pull it up at work. Hope they're doing ok. This is definitely more important than the Crosby news as this goes beyond a game.

The flight engineer, who survived the crash of the Yak-42 near Yaroslavl on the 7th of September, Alexander Sizov, has said that the aircraft was in excellent condition before the flight. He made this statement during his first meeting with journalists.

Alexander Sizov is getting treatment at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute Hospital in Moscow. He was admitted to the hospital after the crash in which the entire “Lokomotiv” ice hockey team that was on its way to Minsk for a march of the Continental Hockey League died.

Experts say that the aircraft ran almost 3 kilometers along the runway and along the ground for another 400 meters before lifting off, failed to gain altitude, struck a tower mast, caught fire and crashed 2 kilometers from the airport. When the plane crashed, Alexander Sizov was at the rear-end and was not wearing his safety belt. Consequently, he felt everything what had happened inside the plane.

“After a short while, passengers started to worry why the plane was not lifting off, and I realized that plane was running on the ground. We lifted off from the ground. I felt that the plane would fall and we would all crash. When the plane hit on the ground everything smashed and I hit against something. The entire right-side was broken,” Alexander Sizov says.

Experts say that the emergency brake theory could be one of the reasons that led to the crash. Commenting on this Alexander Sizov neither conformed nor dismissed this version.

“If the pilot suddenly applied brakes, then we would have felt this. This is similar to a person inside a car. If the brakes are suddenly applied, a passenger continues to move forward through inertia. I did not feel this,” Alexander Sizov said.

According to experts, evidence by Sizov will help the investigative commission to sort out the reasons that led to the crash. The human factor cannot be ruled out in this case. Consequently, the evidence by the flight engineer is very important, says vice-president of the non-profit “Safety Flights” company, Rafail Aptukhov.

“Usually plane crashes take place owing to a combination of several factors. Consequently, the commission is trying to find these and separate them and study them individually. The results of the crash-simulating experiment and evidence by the flight engineer have to be taken into account. To create a real picture, experts have to study not only equipment data but also the impression of an experienced person,” Rafail Aptukhov said.

The Interstate Aviation Committee has already started a “live simulation” experiment at the airport in the city of Zhukovsky near Moscow. The pilots of a Yak-42 plane will repeat the last minutes of the crashed plane. The plane crash near Yaroslavl claimed the lives of 44 people, including the entire Lokomotiv ice hockey team that included players and coaches from Russia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Sweden, Belarus, Ukraine and the crew. The only survivor is flight engineer Alexander Sizov.

to read him describe moments before the crash about the passengers asking about what was happening is very eerie. RIP all... man

I couldn't imagine what it would be like to live through that. My prayers are with all of the families and Alexander.

I could have sworn I heard that too. I thought it was a flight attendant as well as that one player that survived initially but then both died. I'm sure I've heard and read many reports that said everyone was killed. I guess in the minds of some, only the hockey players mattered.

It's great that someone survived. Not only for the obvious reason but he should be able to help the investigation considerably. Hopefully they can determine exactly what the problem was to significantly reduce the chances of it happening again.

Probably some people reporting forgot to specify that it was only the team that didn't make it, that there was someone who DID live through it.

Better that the guy wasn't associated with the team so he didn't have the same attachment to the victims. Still very, very tough to live with.

What does Sidney Crosby have to do with a terrible Russian plane crash? Just wondering...

Yesterday on Yahoo Sports, the Crosby update was the main headline and this was a side item. It frustrates me when we prioritize things that way. It's like how we, as a media-guided society, know more about who Snookie smooshed than the soldiers that we lost that week.
