dude, do you even remember the Tiger era?

crowds these days are massive compared to those back then for the smaller tournaments.
Crowds & viewership are bigger today than during the Tiger era?

I looked, you're right....at least for viewership.

I feel like crowds at tournaments are ridiculous these days...and interest in golf is higher than ever in my mind...the whole "shrink the game" push is real.

this is what AI says.
  • Attendance Trends: Attendance remains strong, but specific, consistent year-over-year data comparing to the peak "Tiger era" is nuanced. Some tournaments continue to break records (e.g., the Honda Classic in 2018). However, reports indicate that attendance at certain events in 2025 has seen a drop compared to previous high-water marks, partly due to factors like weather or the absence of top-tier players.
  • Viewership & TV Ratings: While attendance is similar,TV viewership has been more volatile. After a decline in 2024, ratings have shown a strong comeback in 2025 (e.g., the 2025 Masters was up 33% in viewership). Despite this, many PGA Tour events still struggle with viewership when Tiger is not involved, confirming that his era produced unmatched, consistent viewership peaks.

The PGA tour has a serious star power issue and they know it. And I'm sorry but Scottie is not must watch TV.
He is an incredible golfer ..he plays like a machine. The only problem is he acts like one too.

He just does not have the it factor. Spieth is more fun to watch regardless of how bad he is playing.

The PGA tour has to do something.

Nicklaus didn't have much personality either... nor Tiger imo, ftm.

True, I think that's were that old saying comes from:

"Jack will always be respected but Arnold will always be loved"

Yes, it does mean that and I hate it. Lifetime ban for all of them works for me. They're all rich anyway. They can play out their careers in Asia or Australia.

Bingo.

F*uck those rats.

I am not a fan of this rhetoric around Patrick Reed working his way back to the PGA...mostly because I don't like Patrick Reed.

if it was any other player I think I would appreciate it more.

I'm still shocked they let him back in. He is a bit of a douche.

But I do think this shows how somewhat desperate the PGA Tour is to get back as much star power as they can.
The regular PGA Tournaments need a jolt ...they seem to be harder to watch.

The PGA tour has never been stronger with talented players. What they lost are the villains. The guys people loved rooting against.

Reed can come back because he didn't violate PGA tour regulations. He can earn his way back through the Euro tour (like others have done to gain PGA tour member status). I don't like Reed, but he's definitely putting in the work to get back.

I respect the way he is doing it. He left LIV and went to earn his way back to the PGA, so that's cool.

Has nothing to do with them wanting star power either...he needs to qualify to come back and there are rules for how that can happen.

him being a douche has nothing to do with whether he is allowed or not...I'd rather they not exclude the douches.

it would be like the Yankees leaving to join a Japanese baseball league...then wanting to come back to MLB

I'd say it's more about the Tour seeing an opportunity to give a final death blow to LIV than anything else. Get the 4 or 5 guys back that are good and have personality and let the LIV die.

I suppose but it was always going to die.

Good for Anthony Kim, I loved watching him when he was a young up and comer in the PGA. Shame his career got off track, but I am happy to see him win one.
