We just traded our starting QB for a pick a year from now and one 2 years from now. I think everyone can put away any expectations that they planned on competing at all next year. Looking at it from that standpoint I dont see any chance they draft a QB at #7. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to trade down and then out of the first to pick up future capital. Trade or just RFA tag Golladay for extra picks. Just eat all that dead money this year and start trying to rebuild next year with a higher pick from tanking and possibly multiple other firsts.

If you could get anybody to trade for Goff, feel free. Otherwise he's good enough as a starter for us if we plan on tanking anyways.

Now we're talking. even a 2nd rd pick this year is better than a hopeful 3rd round comp pick next year. non-exclusive rights franchise tag.

NYG wanted to trade for KG before the deadline. Colts and NYJ both need a proven vet WR and have the $$$$

Detroit Lions take on Jared Goff's contract in Matthew Stafford trade (freep.com)

NFL analyst Mike Florio wrote just this week about some of the cap implications of a Goff trade. He'd long advocated against giving Goff big money and said there would be few, if any, teams willing to eat Goff's money.

In hindsight, it was insane to pay Goff $33.5 million per year. It was insane to hitch the wagon to Goff for, as a practical matter, four more seasons. And it would be insane for another team, with so many options at quarterback, to trade for a contract that entails a fully-guaranteed commitment of $43.25 million over the next two years.

Enter the Detroit Lions.

For what it's worth, Stafford's cap hit is also about $43 million over the next two years. He is a free agent after the 2022 season while Goff is signed through 2024. The Lions will carry a $17.8 million dead cap hit in 2021; the Rams $22.2 million, according to Tom Pelissero. Luckily, the Lions have less than $1 million to pay in dead money so far, while the Rams are dealing with an $8 million hit for cutting Todd Gurley.

That 19 million was dead money either way i'd rather just take the hit now and set up for the future.

I realize that. I'm just bitching because they already had 27+M in dead money for the 2020 season and this just adds to the season.

I agree to take the hit now.

I sure as hell hope they don't sign any mid-tier or higher FA this year. Doubtful they do.

As a fan of a divisional rival, it saddens me to 100% agree with those who think the Lions killed it in this trade. In fact, I said on the main board that your GM should arrested for grand theft. Goff is no Stafford, but it's not like he sucks (think Trubisky) and while we're at it, Stafford is no Mahomes or Rodgers. Plus the Lions getting two 1sts and a 3rd along with a starting QB adds up to a bonified steal. And also FWIW, I'd pipe Sean's squeeze every day and 5 times on Sunday, while he's coaching.

People keep saying the Lions lost out on this trade because the first round picks aren't for this year and they're not worth as much. So will they be worth more when they use them next year? I fail to see peoples' logic, I think they're just using Madden 21 trade engine logic and they look stupid.

Matthew Stafford trade negotiations: He and Sean McVay get what they want - Sports Illustrated

Detroit, really, had been set up for this for a while. Stafford made his desires known to owner Sheila Ford Hamp and president Rod Wood the day after the season ended, and it was on the mind of the Lions brass as the group went through interviewing GM and coaching candidates. In fact, it was one area in which Holmes, who worked under Snead and helped evaluate Goff in 2016, distinguished himself.

BB_72; can't blame him. why wait to ponder the situation and see if it was only a temporary emotional thought.

Matthew Stafford trade negotiations: He and Sean McVay get what they want - Sports Illustrated

n Holmes’s first interview with Detroit, he explained the process of picking Goff, and how the Rams had decided to take him over Carson Wentz five years ago. Back for a second interview, after being apprised of the situation with Stafford, rather that recoil, his excitement reverberated—not to move the team off Stafford, but for how he’d handle such a big-ticket situation, from getting value for the quarterback to finding his replacement.

BB_72; Goff isn't going anywhere, anytime soon - at least not for the next two years. That time is Goff's to prove if he can become a reliable starter and whether he stays or goes after 2022.
