So a few weeks back I read about the demise of the Mandrake/Mandriva Linux distro. Got me to wondering just how long a Linux distro lasts in the real world. Then this week I stumble across two distros, SparkyLinux (with 4 different front ends!) and Manjaro (sounds like a spaghetti western) based on Cinnamon.

I have yet to try either of the newer ones but I really liked Mandriva when I tested it a couple or so years back. Just wasn't enough interest to keep up development. There was also a German distro based on Ubuntu (forget the name) that I haven't seen any news on lately.

What Linux distros have you tried?

Right now I use mostly Ubuntu but I really like Zorin which is Ubuntu based with a more Windows 7 like desktop. Hopefully Zorin will start to include better wireless support because currently it can be a pain to get wireless working in Zorin. (which is odd because Ubuntu doesn't seem to have this issue lately)

Never had trouble using Zorin. I favor that Linux OS over others. Since I got busy with SportsHoopla I've been slacking exploring Linux. Need to back on that train.

Ever since Ubuntu went to Unity Windows remote desktop access doesn't work unless you replace Unity with another desktop. Kind of sucks because I like Unity desktop. I can still connect remotely to Windows from Ubuntu however.

I started with Mandrake (became Mandriva) moved to Slackware and have stayed with Slackware ever since. It's not for everyone, but it can be the plumbing for a full featured and very stable desktop. I use Mate as the windows manager (always loved Gnome2). Slackware is the oldest currently maintained distro: 22 years - doesn't change much underneath the hood (in terms of how the OS is organized), which is good IMO.More of a true linux OS (if there is such a thing) than some of the debian based systems and their derivatives (Ubuntu).

I had Linux Mint on an older laptop... very easy, painless install. Like windows, it makes alot of choices for you. I didn't care for that aspect of it, but for someone new to Linux it would be a pretty good distro to cut your teeth on. Everything worked right out of the box.
