It's not making an excuse. There is a reason efficiency numbers tell the better story than points given up. Admittedly they didn't look good against ole Miss, but the game was never in doubt.
When they picked off Burrow on back-to-back drives and were in LSU territory only down 14 in the 4th, my guess is there were some fans who didn't quite think this way. This game wasn't some LSU blowout that Ole Miss made look close at the very end. It was a two-score game for a good part of the second half, including most of the 4th quarter.

IMO the game was never in doubt. I watched the whole thing. I never thought LSU was threatened or anything. If you thought they were, that's fine, we'll just disagree on it.

So what's the threshold for a game "being in doubt"? If the OSU defense was getting gashed that badly and had turned the ball over on back-to-back drives in a 2 TD game, I don't know how on earth you could say you're 100% confident OSU is going to win.

Being up by double digits the entire game, with the opposition showing no signs of stopping the other team outside of a couple INT's is what I'd say. I'll just say, LSU losing never crossed my mind.

As pathetic as those stats read on paper... Watching the game, the defense looked even worse.
I have no dog in the fight, but as a college football fan, I was appalled that a team ranked #1 in the country could have a defense THAT bad. We're talking Bowling Green bad.
I give them credit for being #1 and undefeated in the toughest conference in the country. The offense is obviously tremendous. But regardless of the offense, they won't make the national championship game with the defense I saw Saturday.

i hate when people make excuses for giving up points in the 2nd half of games. They wont win it all playing defense for a half (leading or not)
Baylor learned that lesson. Their offense ran a grand total of 16 plays in the 2nd half.

Rank the defenses in order

LSU
Ohio State
Clemson
Georgia
Oregon

That would be what I assume the top 5 will be tonight

I'd go 1. Ohio State 2. Clemson 3. Georgia.....With LSU and Oregon in a draw for last basically.

Orgeron just wanted to tease his old team.

What's the best offense Ohio State has faced this season? Wisconsin?
 You may be on to something. Looking at FEI
OSU is 92nd in DOA (Defensive Opponent Adjustment aka Defensive Strength of Sch.)
LSU is 14th

But FEI accounts for SOS and at the end of the day
OSU is 2nd in DFEI
LSU is 32nd in DFEI

2010 Auburn was the last team to win it all with a similar Defense (35th DFEI).

I think it's really close between Ohio State and Clemson. Ohio State has the better defensive line, Clemson has the better secondary. These two teams also likely have the top 2 defensive players in the country in Chase Young and Isaiah Simmons, who have both been unstoppable this year. I think if I were comparing the teams, I'd give Ohio State a slight nod on defensive talent, Clemson on offensive talent. I would definitely take Venables over Mattison.

I agree with the rest of your rankings, except I think Oregon has a pretty clearly better defense than LSU, though way behind UGA.

We'll see what happens when the games are played but it's pretty crazy to me how dramatically LSU drops off in the 3rd quarter. It could cost them down the line, but we'll find out

It is the down side to a quick strike offense.
