Joe Goodberry touched on this conversation yesterday. The Bengals have, over the years, signed guys just prior the the draft...and still drafted those very same positions. So, no - neither of these signings, especially being on 1 year deals, points to any history of the Bengals then deciding to NOT draft that position if that is where they feel they need to go.
At this point, with what they have done in free agency, I think Bain is the guy if he is there.

If not, I am just excited about the possibility of the secondary if Downs, Thieneman, Delane or McCoy are drafted.

I would be happy with any of those 5 players you mention.

these guys we just signed aren't big name starters like boye mafe or brian cook. they are people who fill in roster spots. hopefully, they have a good enough preseason to make the team.

Alternative if the picks we are most interested in are drafted ahead of us.

It would require some financial adjustments as the Bengals sucked the big one and fast forwarded all the cap costs to this year for free agents.

I mean, it would be easy for the Bengals to do if they had the desire. But, they would have to convert some of Burrow's salalry to a signing bonus and they would have to sign Sexy Dexy to a new contract. Oh, and it turns out that the best players in the league want guarantees beyond the first year. So, that would mean that they would have to make two moves they are uncomfortable with. No chance.

Pretty accurate.

Bengals waived Matt Lee. A day after Lucas Patrick signed with the Giants.

We can lock in a center pick in the 3rd/4th.

I was told (by our fans) that Matt Lee was an all-pro in the making. Guess not.

I suppose in some ways we should treat this as good news. The Bengals used to just carry crap on their roster because they had no intention of bolstering the room. Losing Patrick and Lee suggests that they are looking for upgrades. Perhaps in the draft and perhaps they are looking at some other roster movement around the league. I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see an inerior linemen taken in the first 3 rounds. Rinser is on a one year deal, Karras is old AF, and they don't have much depth on the bench.

Predictably the interwebs are full of talent evaluators swearing that we dropped the ball by releasing Matt Lee..... This doesn't make sense to me. Why would the Bengals drop a guy with a minimum deal if he offered them ANYTHING..... The guy is clearly hurt or not very good. I criticize the FO as much as anyone, but to pretend that this is somehow a catastrophic error is a little ungrounded.

As Lapham would say "The best ability is availability"...Lee was often hurt...

Today's PFF run netted me: Thieneman, Jacas, Halton. I'd take that every day - all day.

I really like Jacas in round 2 if they want to go DE there. He has been productive for 3 straight years. Lacks high-end athleticism, but graded out at 9.56 on the RAS. He reminds me a ton of Sam Hubbard, who by the way was only a 7.4 on the RAS I believe. Jacas is sneaky athletic and while he doesn't flash like Bailey or Bain, or some others...his high score and his track record of consistent production should have him a lot higher on draft boards than what I've seen going around.

Halton might be the best 3T behind Woods in the draft...if you could land him here...that's a massive steal.

I think that's a bit too high for Lew. I wonder who was still around at 41 and then again at 72.

I like the Ramsey pick in the 4th, though. That's good value.
