I really, really, really, really can't believe that hit may result in a suspension.

'let's give the pens 13 games in 24 days, open with canada trip, bug crosby about return and suspend players for giggles' -nhl

Someone tweeted that...and the pitiful part of me agrees. *sigh*
The hearing was at 1130.

Kris Letang is a talented player, but he also "plays on the edge" and he's had a few questionable hits in his NHL career. I would include last night's hit in this category and we'll just have to wait and see what the sheriff rules.

He's had some borderline moments, I know that...but last night he committed to the hit far before the boards, and Burmistrov was falling before he got to the boards too. It was a 2 minute penalty, no history of suspensions, etc.

@RealKyper: Letang not considered repeat offender, but he was fined $2500 for similar situation in play-offs. It will factor in decision.

if he was fined for a similar situation recently, then he is by definition a repeat offender.

Crosy, Malkin, Kennedy, Oprik, and Letang are out.

I indeed am aroused.

I'm okay with the suspension, although I start to wonder if there's a point to the two-minute boarding penalty. Seems like you're either not boarding, or you're doing what Letang did there.

The only thing I don't like about the play, is that Burmistov could have just kept skating up the ice, cleared the puck, and taken the hit. He turns. It's not sudden enough to get Letang off the hook, but he still is intentionally putting himself in a more dangerous position. The problem is, that usually results in either the defender easing off the check or drawing a penalty.

I am all right with this decision. Letang could have let up, but he decided not to, and he will have to pay the penalty for his decision.

However, I want consistency with this new discipline system. In my opinion, it is already inconsistent. I have counted two hits on Penguin skaters that have been targeted in the head, and there wasn't a thing done about either one of them.

It looks nice on the surface that the players are being protected, but I don't see consistency with it, and we are only in week two the season. You can bet this will only continue.

Kennedy isn't much of a loss there though.

Prior to last season, I would have agreed with you. While Malkin and Crosby were out of the lineup last season, no one on the Pens roster was putting the puck in the back of the net at a faster rate than Tyler Kennedy. Trust me, his presence will be missed.
