Well, it was a snow storm in Toronto that worked for me. Vern Buffey was supposed to referee a Saturday afternoon game in Minnesota between the Hawks and North Stars. Instead of leaving the day before, he tried to leave Saturday morning but all flights out of Toronto were canceled. I was the emergency replacement linesman in Minnesota and I also had season tickets for the North Stars. They tried to call me at home but I wasn't there when they called. I got to the rink and the two Linesmen who were to work the game told me to get my equipment because I was going to work. I had worked a college game the night before and my equipment was at home, not in my car trunk, drying out. I only lived ten minutes from the rink so I drove home and got it. When I got back to the rink the game had started with one of the Linesmen taking over as the referee. I got dressed and went down the corridor to the ice. I waited for the next stoppage in play. They were about five minutes into the game. No time for any game preparation or skating around the ice to warm up. I stepped onto the ice with everyone watching me, met with the other two officials and went to work.
I got to live my dream because of a snow storm.
Why no talk of the 2,500 to 3,000 that watched the Leafs play the Devils? (they announced a little over 5,000, but didn't appear to be the case.)
