The Sharks have hired Hall of Fame defenseman Larry Robinson as an assistant coach, bringing on board a veteran whose most recent time behind the bench was with the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup finals.

A formal announcement will be made Monday with Robinson expected to be put in charge of not only the team's blue-liners, but also a penalty kill in need of a major overhaul.

Robinson, 61, played 1,384 NHL games over 20 seasons and won six Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Kings in 1992. Over that time, he had 208 goals and 750 assists, winning the Norris Trophy twice as the NHL's best defenseman in 1977 and 1980 as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player in the playoffs in 1978.

He has served as a head coach with both Los Angeles and New Jersey, and spent the last three seasons as an assistant with the Devils.

One report last week noted that Robinson told the Devils he wanted to spend more time with his grand-children, at least one of whom lives in California.

Great news! This is arguably the best signing in the offseason that dougie has ever made. LR is a great asset and will surely help change the way this team runs. he knows Defense inside an out with two devils cups based 100% on the trap and D. He is the ideal candidate to handle that sharks weakness. Now, all the need a 3rd line, and next year gets a whole lot more exciting.

This is huge...

Good to know that we will have a legitimate head coach to replace McLellan with once we are bounced in the first round again. Also, no more having to look at Woodcroft's goofy ass behind the bench either! What a clown that guy was.

Wow, this came out of no where. Good to see he got an associate position instead of just an assistant. This should be great for the developement of Burns, Vlasic, Demers, and Braun.

What's the difference other than semantics? Does this infer that he is not "under" Tmac?

Also, we all know dougie loves cup experience (see overpay for burish, hiring of tmac, etc...) Well, 9 cups including 3 as a coach is surely pretty significant experience.

I am really interested to see how different the defensive approach and PK are. I am also really interested to see if LR helps demers and braun develop the offensive side of their game as well. Right now, the sharks have boyle and burns who can get a shot through and create offensively, but if demers and braun became effective in all three zones, the sharks future on D would look ver very different with 4 solid Dmen 27 or under.

Yeah, this is great for sure. Exciting stuff.

Interesting bit re: associate instead of assistant. Should light a fire under McLellan too, hopefully.

More responsibility. Associate coaches usually have a lot of input on both offense and defense as well as all aspects of the team where as assistants have specified areas they handle. This designates a true #2 guy behind McLellan.

Hard to complain about a HOF Dman and 9 time cup winner (3 as a coach) joining the team. The guy brings instant respectability and a powerful presence in the locker room. As good (or not) as Tmac has been, he can give a speech about what it takes as a player or head to coach to win. He piggy backed one championship on a stacked detroit squad with several future HOFers including the best D man in a generation, arguably ever. Larry Robinson won cups with a rather unstacked NJ squad and he knows what it takes to win.

The Assistant coach position was a clear problem, and I would expect this should fix it.

By no means are the sharks a cup contender right now, nevertheless. They have absolutely nothing in the bottom 6, so teams will still shut them down offensively. Having a good PK doesnt fix scoring 1 goal a game. however, if they can sign doan and drop pavs to a third line, then we mgiht have an outside shot. Pavs-galiardi-wingels has potential, depending largely on whether galiardi can return to the form of a few years ago. it's risky, but with pavs on the line, he and wingels should get more chances and it gives the sharks a nice 1-2-3 down the middle with good FO men everywhere.

One good signing and there is hope again...

Yeah, I look at it the same way. If they can somehow land a good forward and create a solid 3rd line, they could contend.
Love the move to get Robinson. Like you said, nobody can complain about this move. It will definitely help the D and the PK.

The PP was 3rd in the league. Hard to complain too much about it. Obviously 2-17 in the PO's wasnt too good, but it's pretty much impossible to whne you are often playing from behind and when you give up better than at least 1 shorthanded goal per game.

If three things happen (and one thing doesnt) between now and the PO's, the sharks will be contenders:

1. The PK jumps back to respectable, or even top 10 in the league. This is possible now that they have one of the top Defensemen in the game and a defensive expert in charge. Coaching was clearly the problem last year and I think they can be top 10 with a new , more aggressive and positionally sound approach.

2. They get a legit 3rd line. I cant believe dougie signed burish instead of focusing on this area. last year, if cooch, pavs, or patty didnt score, the team was sunk. Better balanced attack has gotta be a main goal. One top top 6 forward addition would mean pavs or clowe becomes a 3rd liner, and the line would become a little scary. Then another player can be added at the deadline, and the sharks could be in business.

3. The young D develop. Right now, boyle and burns are the only threats from the blueline and when anyone else is out there, it kinda felt like 4 on 5. Well, with robinson training them, If demers refinds his tough from a few years ago, and Braun taps into his Hockey east offensive punch at Umass, The sharks D could suddenly look 6 deep. Hell, even pickles was a big scorer in jr's, so robinson might help him too. If the D corp comes together and the youngin's develop, then the sharks have potential to be a solid team from the back end.

what cannot happen: Injuries. No matter how you look at it, the sharks arent deep, especially up front. One injury to any of cooch, pavs, patty, jumbo or havlat, and the sharks are sunk. We saw it last year, so for the sharks to be true contenders, they must be healthy.

If the stars align, the could be a "New Hope" ;-)
