Kopitar wants the respect (read money) that other two time cup winner #1 centers get.
Kings can not show that respect because of all the respect they have given everyone else, Doughty, Brown, quick. With a shrinking cap respect is hard to come by.
That's a starting point, thus begins the games called "negotiation". Still sticking to my guns, 8 years/$74 million ($9.25 million AAV) or 8 years/$76 million ($9.5 AAV). The Kings will not let him hit the UFA market.
Sure, Toews is making $10.5 million or whatever and both have Cup rings, but Toews is the captain of the team and also won the Selke Trophy 2012-13 and a Messier Leadership Award Winner. And while this shouldn't count towards NHL money, he is an Olympic Gold Winner for Canada in 2014.
While they are essentially the same player, they are also not, either. Not a knock on either one, I love em both.
The thing that worries me and that I read somewhere ( I will try to find the article) is that the effect the Canadian dollar is having on the cap. Because it has fallen the cap may not go up as much as Dean and the Kings want. In addition Richards maybe back on the books as well as Voynov. Not to mention that there are a slew of RFAs to worry about at the end of next season. Not to mention Lucic will also want to get paid. That however is not that much of a concern seeing that Lucic is in his contract year too and that he may be playing for a contract with the 'Nucks. I honestly don't see him back with the Kings after this season.
Canadian dollar taking a hit is bad for certain. I don't think the Hawks were anticipating a drop from .96 to .74 in a 2 month span after dishing out the contracts to Kane and Toews and you are correct, the Kings will be in a similar situation with Kopitar and his new contract.
I think the Kings are making moves as if Richards and Voynov are not part of the team, and they have to do that. They are two time recent champions and they can't wait for those situations to sort themselves out to compete again for a Cup. Their window is now, guys are getting older and they will deal with those issues as they arrive.
As of now, Richards is legally off the books and Voynov is suspended and doesn't count against the cap. If Richards' is back on the books, Voynov will be traded most likely (or someone else to make room for Voynov). If Richards' case doesn't stick, the money that is left on the cap will go to Voynov's salary and his spot on the team. The Kings have conducted business as if they are not part of the team and rightfully so.
Lucic I believe may be back depending on how he does. I honestly believe he is Dustin Brown's replacement. If Brown shits the bed again for the third year in a row and Lucic plays well, Brown will be shopped. And that contract is an albatross but we've seen eye popping contracts like that moved before - it's extremely difficult but not impossible - so they will be actively shopping Brown at the end of the season if Lucic outplays him, and if so he will be resigned with the money they just gained on Brown barring major salary not coming back the other way.
Little higher ($250,000 per year) than what I anticipated but that's A-OK with me - he is worth every penny. Arguably the best centerman LA has had in its history and that includes Gretzky.
Hope it is signed soon.
The wife tried to help. Of the 18 NHL signatures she has gotten 17 have not been on the team to start the next season. Mostly no name guys. But O' Sullivan, camilari, (my favorite) Calder and Stu Grimson ( when he was a Duck) all fell to her curse. The sole survivor: Dustin Brown. We were volunteers at an event and the put us with Upper Deck hockey cards. Brown was signing for an hour and we kept the line straight ( tough job). At the end they handed both of us signed pictures. That was before the Cups. No trade.
She had the chance to get Getlaf last year. She wouldn't let him had us anything.
