These are fucking insane numbers. I get locking up talent but Phil Kessel is not worth $8 million a year. He doesn't create space for himself, he relies on his linemates a great deal. Given the right center he can be a 30 goal guy every year but for a huge contract like that you need to be able to flip a switch and carry your team.

Those Toronto centers are definitely carrying him, said no one ever. I'm not surprised by any of these numbers. Guy has been a 35 goal scorer 5-6 years in a row. How many guys can say that? Vanek got $7/ when the cap was half as high as it is now.

I love statistical analysis, but this isn't exactly definitive. Where are the stats for those players without Phil? Isn't it logical that if you lose a great player on a top line that his line mates might suffer. Goalies and defense men have an easier job targeting one threat vs 2.

i agree i really dont know why we could'nt have signed both the same day. they were both equally valuable to the team and the fans. if they did this i think kovy is still on this team

look at it this way...the loafs have almost $15MM per year tied up in Kessel & Clarkson alone...I think that's a good thing for us long term
