Well boys. The first domino has fallen. Lets see what the rest of them sign for.

$17 million, McJesus just went to $19 million in Edmonton unless he takes a little bit of a discount like he did on his last contract (8 years/$100 million, $12.5 million AAV). If he goes UFA that just became the league's first $20 million player.

Either way the ball is rolling now, and Kempe just became a $10 million guy minimum if not a little more. Obviously we don't know how negotiations are going/went with Kempe but sure looks to me like Holly will have no choice now but to budge off his initial sub $9 million offer. Good job clown - Bowlby paid guys way too much too early (Buster, Petersen, etc), Holly will pay guys way too late and way more once the price is driven up by the market being set instead of being proactive and having more flexibility.

I expect we will see some of the names set for UFA next summer to start signing contracts now.

Guerin being Guerin. Kinda funny. The Wild needed to pony up, but this one is a big contract and I'm not sure how you build around guys like this.

You become a top heavy team like Edmonton or TO, not enough left to fill out your roster with quality players and the talent level drop off between L1 and beyond is significant. Does L2-L4 or D2-D3 for the Oilers scare anyone? Not a chance in hell.

I know I sound like a bitter dick harping on the blown draft picks constantly, but hitting on those prevents this exact situation. For at least two contracts if players are drafted and developed properly they are cost controlled almost to free agency which allows more financial freedom to go get that missing piece(s).

You miss on them like the Kings have so much, you're forced to trade a Faber and a first for a Fiala. Depletes assets, both financial (cap implication) or prospects (organizational depth implication) or in this example both. In the case of Dunno you end up paying $33 million for essentially a defensive center who can't score, you can get those guys for half the cost Bowlby paid in free agency or via a trade using a lower pick or maybe even develop your own (again, cost controlled) if you do it right.

Dumbo conducted an absolute masterclass on this which resulted in the Cup teams. It helped Yanetti hit big on several drafts between 2006-2009 but he hasn't been able to replicate that at all.

According to Friedman, he heard Kempe was asking in the $10.5 million range. It's dated yesterday 9/30 so I'm assuming that was before the Kaprizov signing.

Pretty sure that just went up.

I think this is why guys like Kempe and Kyle Connor waited to sign extensions. Just like NFL, just wait it out as comps rise. I think this moves Kempe to closer to $12m.

Kings shoulda offered 10m before the end of the season, there was no reason to wait and then low ball him. Acting like there is a plan if Kempe walks? Why even **** around with that

Exactly. I said weeks, maybe months ago that if he's asking 10 or 10.5 give him 11 and don't forget to thank him.

On a side note is Marner looking stupid at 12m?

Because you can over spend on Peepee instead.

=)~~

In all seriousness, complete SNAFU by LA. Now they will be forced to pay more than the $10.5M he was requesting. I'm also concerned if reports are true that the initial offer from LA was $8.5M, I would be completely insulted were I Kempe after everything he has done for LA and the perception that seems to be growing that players don't want to come to LA. Would have went a long way to quell that.

Reminds me of when LA lowballed Blake (as much as I can't stand him) in summer 2000. We saw how that worked out. Market at that time was $9 million minimum because of Pronger ($9.5 million) and should have been the starting point. It wasn't from LA, they started at $8M and final offer was $8.5M. He took $9M to stay in Colorado - just as the market dictated.

Holly is stupid.

So I was watching a fantasy hockey draft and saw this dude Jackson Lacombe go fairly high and that was the first time I'd ever heard of him. This feels like a crazy dollar amount that one side is going to regret in a few years. The fact that Verbeek threw that much down on this kid makes me think maybe he's just that good. Article said he was invited to USA training camp to potentially make the team .
