We all have talked about the Giants' collapse this year .... but .... was it really a collapse .... or is the issue quite different ...
On August 1st the Giants record was 55-55. But if you look into these 110 games you can glean a somewhat different picture ... than a collapse .... very different ...
During these 110 games the Giants had TWO very impressive streaks, They opened the season at 12-4 and had an 8-0 streak in early June.
These two streaks combine for a record of 20-4 over these 24 games. That means for the remaining 86 games we had a record of 35-51.
A record of 35-51 equates to about playing .400 over these 86 games. These 86 games also equates to about 78% of the 110 game total. This means that for 78% of this chunk of the season we played .400 ball! That is not indicative of a collapse. This tends to indicate what the team is really like. Rather than tank, we played exceptional ball for 22% of this part of the season.
For me personally, this aspect of what was happening was lost because our pitching was actually great. We were losing a lot of close games. In quite a few of these games we only gave up 3 or less runs. I always thought our hitting would turn around and we would be fine .... but it never really did.
I just don't believe that we actually collapsed ..... more like a long fall into mediocrity ...
