In case anyone hasn't caught up with it, this is an interesting little tidbit.....

The Pirates have a relief pitcher at Indianapolis, Jose "Jumbo" Diaz, who is a really big guy..... 6' 4" and 300 pounds.

Seems that Diaz stole third base in the Indianapolis game yesterday. Wish the video clip showed more of him running. (His slide looked a little late, but I'm guessing that he rarely runs the bases.)

if you read the comments below from viewers, a very insightful comment.
paraphrased - how can jumbo diaz steal third without a throw and mccutcheon cant steal second?!

this is a head scratcher.

I would guess it's a combination of two things: no one expected Jumbo to go, so he could get a massive jump and no one would notice, and it's easier to steal third than second, but happens less often simply because it's so much less worth the risk.

i guess the biggest aspect is the huge fat guy was able to read something. not sire cutch is able to read the move and slide headfirst.
do we have someone to coach our speedsters. hanson and polanco have poor percentages as well as cutch, tabata, and presley.

d'arnaud has an amazing rate this year and last. can we find a special coach and enhance this part of our offense as we need edge and help anywhere we can get it.

I would guess since he's 300 pounds, no one even checked on him and he just kept getting a bigger and bigger lead, and when the pitch was thrown, he was already halfway to third before he started running.

You can't really tell from the video but it almost looks like he started taking off when the Pitcher got set, who did not even look back.
