Luke Fickel or Sonny Dykes would have been a better choice.

My response to this is in the "Tennessee fires Jeremy Pruitt" thread.

Not a guy that will move the needle
I don't know. He may be able to get them off of that morphine drip they've been under the last few years.

Tennessee boosters should really be test subjects. How much money have the spent in total just to have their goal be a good G5 program? I mean it is bad when Ole Miss had the coach you can’t get over and Mississippi State has the coach you threatened to burn down Knoxville if he got hired.

If any of you had bothered to pay any attention to Tennessee football these past twenty years, you'd know that there are issues (Haslams included) impacting the willingness of accomplished ADs and coaches to work there. When God's gift, Joan Cronan demures from taking the AD job post-Hamilton disaster, even the innocent deduce that something's amiss at the top.

Hiring White is a win. Plain and simple. You don't think so, remember to wash your hands afterwards. Now, even when your "MISTER White," you've got inherited issues which will make hesitant some top shelf talent. Some candidates who can coach ball had to be eliminated because UT has recruiting-related issues with the NCAA and those candidates have similar in their histories. If UT is to avoid the harshest outcome from infractions, they must replace Pruitt with Mr. Squeaky Clean. Heupel was not the first or the second target of White, but given the situation, he's a better hire than grounded Tennessee alums expected.

Forget Freeze. Fuq Kiffin. We're sorry good coaches with recruiting infractions in their histories. Heupel has been hired. GBO!

I'll say he's a better hire than Auburn's but that's about it.

With unknown sanctions coming in and internal issues Tennessee was quite frankly lucky to get anyone with a known name. Frankly, White and Huepel's job right now is simply to stabilize the ship. Do not expect anything other than doing that for the next few years. Huepel was a safe choice and a known quantity fore White IMO.

I'm honestly not sure I think of Huepel as a stability hire. I'm reminded of the Mizzou - Tennessee game where the announcers were talking about Huepel's plans to play as quickly as possible to score as many points as he could. That kind of thing works really well when you have a talent advantage but Mizzou ended up losing the game 63-37. I look forward to returning the favor if Tennessee trots out a middling team.

It also seems like UCF regressed every year he was there. I don't have a particularly high opinion of him but I guess we'll find out.

He inherited a gold mine from Frost, and their trend was Cokeresque.
