According to the Pitt. Post Gazette, Staal left the arena last night on crutches, and it's been reported he could miss time measured in weeks, not days.

This is bad news for the Penguins PK, and it will hamper the Pens ability to tie down the opposition's top line, as Staal's third line is usually matched up against the opponent's 1st line.

Staal injured, likely to miss significant time

Big loss for the Pens. It's a good thing they are deep at center. I think they can get by the Habs without him but it could be a problem should they reach the SCF.

There are a few teams in the west that are also pretty deep. I wonder how long he will be out?

He's also one of the biggest playoff performers on the team. Talbot/Rupp/Adams have some big shoes to fill.

two-thirds of the Pens third line is now eliminated from the lineup. The battle of attrition has begun on the Pittsburgh roster. I hope they can keep their heads above water.

Two-thirds? He is that third line. He makes up for Kennedy's impatience and Cooke's lack of speed. I'm worried.

Penguins' Staal out for the playoffs after tendon surgery

If the Pittsburgh Penguins are to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, they will have to do it without Jordan Staal.

Staal underwent surgery Friday night to repair a severed tendon in his ankle and will be out for the remainder of the playoffs. It is the same injury that caused Andrei Markov to miss 35 games at the beginning of the season.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native had two goals and two assists in seven games for the Penguins in this year's playoffs, the loss will be felt on the Penguins penalty kill where the Selke Trophy nominee excels.

Staal had never missed an NHL game due to injury to this point in his career, having played 358 consecutive games.

I look for Bylsma to plug in Mark Letestu and see what he can do.

This is awful. Staal is an asset in the playoffs. Just awesome.

I would put Talbot as third line center, with Adams at fourth. I know I basically lick Talbot's jock on a regular basis, but he is exactly the type of player who will step it up when a teammate goes down.

Penguins center Jordan Staal has undergone what coach Dan Bylsma described as a "procedure" to repair a severed tendon in his right foot.

Bylsma said he is listed as "day-to-day" and pointedly denied reports that Staal is out for the season.

i have not really watched the pens enough this year to know how much of a difference he will make. the pens finished the game fine without him although they did score 4 goals.
