Apparently Gruden is wanting to see them getting more time.

Per a Tweet from CBS Sports Cincinnati:

Talking to OC Jay Gruden, not giving up on anyone, but sounds like ready to give more WR snaps to backups (Jones, Sanu, Whalen).

I don't know. I like Whalen. He is a sure handed little wide receiver, with good quicks and a little elusive. Kinda like a healthy poor mans Shipley. I think Sanu and Jones do need much more playing time though, as t hey are playmakers, and good damn run blockers, Tate and Binns not so much from what I have seen.

Yeah, Whalen isn't going to blow games open, but he can make plays and move the sticks. He's solid, but not spectacular.

I have seen zero evidence of Whalen's ability to get open beyond 10 yards downfield. We're already full of guys who can catch five yard passes. I want Marvin Jones starting at the 2, and Sanu spelling Baby Hawk in the slot.

We don't have anyone else that can beat man coverage downfield either, except Green, so unless your name is Green, your probably not going to get a deeper ball from Dalton regardless. It is all about the YAC. Catch the ball, make something happen. That is the nature of the WCO. Bratkowski was not a WCO coordinator, everyone hated him. We go to something completely different that is partially succeeding with lesser talent at QB I suppose, and yet everyone bitches.

Dalton will not be one of those guys that goes deep 5 times a game. He may have a ton of playes over 50 yards, but that is mostly all YAC again. That is the WCO, guess we better get used to it, regardless of who is QB if Gruden is going to be our OC.

Brat sucked - play calling and scheming - and everyone rightfully complained. Nobody is complaining about the scheme or play calling now, we're complaining about the PERSONNEL. Two entirely different worlds.

The WCO has evolved over the years to mix in a lot more deep throws with the talent level we see and the rule changes. There are a few coordinators who haven't caught on yet, but Gruden isn't one of them. Gruden has been good at getting yac, but he hasn't shied away from the deep ball either, last season or this.

Whalen sucks. Of this I am confident. He is no better than Binns or Tate. Probably even the same player.

I was just confused that we're referring to Armon Binns as someone who can get YAC

I haven't watched the games like earlier this year... the Reds losing sapped my energy to watch teams blow... but in the 3 losses we have had, how many passing attempts have been made to Baby Hawk? When they include him more, good things happen.

Good point. He played mostly special teams last night. That makes no sense at all.

they have no idea how to get him involved in the offense. same with Leonard and Sanu. They aren't "traditional" players. Plenty of other teams would find a way.

If you looked at the previous 3 games prior to the Steelers game, Hawkins was non-effective. They tried to get him open in space, but every play was snuffed out. This is a product of having no other weapons outside of Green to take the attention of the defense. Furthermore, the Bengals tried to counter this by sending him on routes down the field and he turned out to be a tough target to hit with his being only 5'7" and Dalton having the propensity to overthrow his receivers.

I've been saying this for over a month now. This was expected. It's not a scheme thing, it's a personnel thing.

well, Jones is hurt for at least a few weeks, supposedly he had multiple snaps with the offense in practice and didn't even get to play offense.

I'd rather see Sanu play and learn at this point than for Binns to go out there and do whatever the heck it is he's been doing or not doing. Tate doesn't scare opposing defenses either. Whalen will try, but this ain't the preseason, so he won't succeed.

At least Sanu has shown he's not easy to tackle.....
