I knew about Mississippi Valley State way back when they were scoring over 60 and 70 points a game beating up on Grambling, Jackson State, Alcorn etc etc. They ran a run and gun offense, QB Willie Totten throwing to five wide receivers, only used a RB in short yardage. One of those receivers, Jerry Rice.

I kept up with that season just out of curiousity being a big HBCU fan, bummer was no MVS on tv.

It was Christmas day and the old Blue vs Grey All Star game, I had my chips and dip, a Dr. Pepper when the Grey took the field, so who was out there at WR.....Jerry "World" Rice and he didn't disappoint. Keep in mind now he was burning big schools guys, and he scorched them, put on a show.

I do think that MVS team could have hung with the big schools that season.

There is no position in football where a player is so far dominate as Jerry Rice is at WR. Nobody remotely close to him'

Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson aren't far behind him. So, remotely close isn't 100% accurate.

Hmmmm?

Rice All Pro 10, Moss 4, Johnson 3
Rice Pro Bowl 13, Moss 6, Johnson 6
Rice receptions 1549, Moss 982, Johnson 731
Rice yards 22, 895, Moss 15,292, Johnson 11, 619
Rice TD 197, Moss 156, Johnson 83

Not really all that close actually.

I do like that nickname...MEGATRON.

Popularity contest and longevity. And Johnson retired in his prime.

If that's what you think more power to you. Rice is the best ever but it's not as far as you think.

Of course no WR compares to what Don Hutson was doing in his day, but can we reallly count that?

Johnson averaged 15.8ypc. Moss 15.6. Rice 14.8.

But Jerry also put up those averages playing basically until his children had grey hairs

Jerry averaged 84 ypg and 16.6 ypc for his first 9 seasons. He also caught 118 TDs during those seasons (Johnson finished with 83).

No they could not have competed against the big schools just because the goat was one of their WRs.. too weak, too small, too slow and basically not enough talent everywhere else.

Rice played till he was 42. Moss 35. Johnson 30.

#Perspective

Johnson played nine seasons, trust me you don't want to compare those nine seasons to what Rice did in his first nine seasons. Same with Moss.

What makes you think they would have been able to hang with the big schools that year?

This is a discussion board. We post opinions and people reply... rinse/repeat. That's how this is supposed to work. What's your problem?

Just find it funy how you always disagree with everything.

That MVS team was doing something different and they had it down. They were destroying the opposition, wipe outs. I can't see anyone being able to stop it. First off nobody could hang with Rice, and Willie Totten was as good as anyone that season. Sure no 70 to 10 games but can see 32-28 vs a power five team. And unlike what we see now LSU 88 Savannah State 7, we;d see none of that, more LSU 34 MSV 17.
