Maybe.

Maybe not.

A better question is; will he win the MVP award? Has a guy that is primarily a DH ever won the MVP?

It would be criminal if he isn't the MVP of the league

The difference in the AL East this season is 100% JD Martinez

:noidea:

I seriously don't know if a DH has ever won it before. Martinez has been a beast this year and he should win it.

During the offseason more than a few of the local pundits and radio talking heads were blasting the Red Sox for not getting Stanton and mocking them for "ONLY" getting Martinez, a couple of them going as far as saying that J.D. would suck in Boston :L

Edgar never won an MVP but he was 3rd in 1995 behind Mo Vaughan and Albert Belle. In hindsight, he was fucking robbed.

Betts is really good defensively though, and he's got a much higher OBP than JDM. Plus Trout, of course.

Any one of them would be fair winners.

There are people here that will tell you that LAST AUGUST, I was calling for JD to be the AL MVP this season, In Boston

I said long before opening day he was FAR better than Stanton

His landing in Boston was my greatest fear because it all made so much sense if you watched the 2017 Sox and knew what they were missing

This has unfortunately for me, played out exactly how I expected

What'll hurt Martinez' case is that it's a strong field of MVP candidates this year, with Betts, Trout, Ramirez, Lindor and maybe Bregman all having MVP caliber years.

If it were a weak MVP crop he'd probably be the frontrunner, but there's just too many guys having big years imo..

Bregman is a good one, too overlooked when you consider the pressure the As have put on them and the serious injury hits that lineup has taken

Yea, underrated year for sure. If he were in the NL he'd easily be the frontrunner (as would any of those other top AL guys)....

After seeing his hit chart I had a pretty good feeling that he would hit well at Fenway, but I had no idea he had as much opposite field power as he does. I don't think anyone thought he would be as good as he is.

Don Baylor won one back in the 70s, and DH'ed at least 50% of his teams games if memory serves. I think that's as close as it's gotten.

Another question-is this the best Red Sox FA signing of all time?

I don't see how you could put JD Martinez ahead of David Ortiz or Manny Ramirez just yet.

Couldn't help myself, I had to look it up. Baylor won the MVP in 79 with the Angels and played 65 games as the DH.
