to give more access to some of the worthier mid-major teams; but it still had a couple of big misses by including a pair of major conference teams that didn't deserve to be there.
Neither Oklahoma, tied for 7th place at 7-11 in the Big 12 & 19-13 overall; nor Ohio St., at 8-12 & 19-14, and tied for 8th place in the Big 10, were worthy of an at-large bid. No team that finishes 4 games under .500 in conference play should be in the tournament unless they manage to somehow pull off a conference tournament championship.
The Buckeyes were 1-8 vs AP ranked teams/1-9 vs ranked teams in the coaches' poll. The Sooners were 2-6/1-5. Texas had a better claim, with a 3-7/4-7 record vs ranked teams, but missed out due to a 16-16 overall mark. Even Alabama had better credentials, at 8-10 & tied for 9th in the SEC, had better credentials, going 18-15 overall & 3-3/3-3 vs ranked teams; but they didn't deserve to be in, either.
The teams that should have been chosen in place of Oklahoma & Ohio St. should have been two of the following four: Lipscomb 14-2 in the Atlantic Sun, 25-7 overall; Toledo 13-5 in the MAC, 25-7 overall; UNC-Greensboro, 15-3 & 28-6 from the Southern Conference; or, Drake, 12-6 & 24-9 in the Missouri Valley.
