It's ice fishing season!!

Got some good cold weather going on and making the ice safe for us ice heads. Anybody in the area ever want to give it a go I am willing to travel to fish new waters. No major trips planned this season, so I have to come up with something.

I've never been ice fishing but am going to pop my cherry this year. I have $100 to spend on ice fishing gear. What are the essentials I need? (starting from ground zero). Any advice is much appreciated.

Popped my ice fishing cherry over the weekend and I can officially say I'm hooked! Granted it helps when the weather isn't miserably cold but man it was nice to be in the outdoors on a beautiful winter day!

I haven't lived in the cold-cold-cold in 14 years roughly but I recall as a kid (Wisco) going out on the lakes and enjoing time in the ice shack. We would drill holes and relax in there but also go put out some flag (can't remember what they are called) fishing hooks.

The one thing I remember was how clear I could see down the drilled holes, I watched fish swim right by my hook, could see the bottom!

I need to get up north more... just need to buy a few new sets of clothes to be able to visit though! haha.

Anybody still ice fishing in the midwest? We went a few days ago and while the ice was probably only 3-4 inches thick we tried anyway. Caught several fish in the first 20 minutes or so and my buddy snagged a real nice catfish but shortly after that the ice was adjusting and we could feel it moving beneath us. That's when we called it a day.

Yeah, my gear has been packed away for a couple of weeks now. I don't play around with late season ice. I hear the perch are absolutely tearing it up way up north on Devils lake though.

Shoot, I'm stuck in friggin' Kansas. It was like 49 degrees yesterday. I'm heading to Minnesota in about three weeks for a few days on the ice. Might be all I get this year.

We are going to Cass Lake, way up north. They are sitting on about 15" of solid clear ice with several days of near zero temps in the forecast.

It was damn near zero for all of November. Some great ice was made pretty early in the season.
