The 1980s called, they want their Yankees critique back.

The rich get richer.
It's taken a lot away from the game. You can just keep throwing money at it instead of having to build a team.

Yeah that hair is wild
I saw Prince in the clubs in Minneapolis in the late 70s. His music was new and refreshing.
But that is a bit off the topic of the thread.
Watch the way the Rays build their team. They draft and develop well and when players get too expensive, they trade them for prospects.

Lucky bastard (re Prince)

The A's do it similar to the Rays. Not every team has to do it like that though.

The A's did it first. The Rays look like they are doing it better.
First St. station was one of the "hot" clubs back in the late 70's (RE Prince). It was quite interesting.

You're saying they never actually drafted and developed the players they traded to the Nats... Why then not get on the Nats for letting themselves get fleeced?

Yeah the Scherzer deal really doesn't stand out as crazy overspending. It seems like a good deal that any team would have liked to make. When you get a pitcher on his last year of a contract at the deadline like that you're usually just paying the prorated amount left on the contract for those last couple months. And Tre Turner still has a year left of team control.

The funny thing about the Dodgers is if you look at the core guys that are actually playing right now they look exactly like a team that has done it "the right way" (whatever that means). You got 3 all stars they took off the scrap heap of other teams, some guys that came through the farm system, and the one spend up on Pollock who has basically been good but has been injured way more than they had hoped.

Of course having seemingly unlimited cash gives them the benefit of being able to overcome mistakes or bad luck much easier than other teams.
The part that starts to look a little crazy is when you see they spent more than the Rays entire payroll on Bauer, Betts and Price. Then I guess "just to be safe", they throw a few million to have Danny Duffy and Cole Hamels lurking somewhere on their roster.

But to their credit, they have done a great job of convincing other teams that they have the best package of prospects to get some of these players.

Its a shame that you can go out and buy a team to win a championship instead of having to develop a team to win one
This has been going on forever. In two cities, LA and NYC.

Remember a guy by the name of George Steinbrenner? Name one superstar that he didn't at least 'try' to buy?

Of course there wasn't any Luxury Tax back then.

Today, the Dodgers won't quit.

Boston has done plenty of buying too. They have drafted well and made shrewd trades, but they have consistently had very high end payrolls over the last couple of decades.
