The governing body says that of the 14,000 players currently competing in professional tennis events, almost half do not earn any prize money.

Don't you get prize money for playing a match?

Even if you lose in the 1st round, isn't there some prize money (a few thousand dollars?)

For Miami, it's $13, 609 for losing in the first round.

Miami Open Prize Money

So even at smaller tourneys, isn't it still something, at a fraction of that?

The Memphis Open gives out $642,750 in prize money.

9.1% of the Miami Open.

So again, wouldn't that scale to about $1,238 for losing in the 1st round of the Memphis Open?

It's not. Most of them are just ex-college level players who are just playing a tourney or two for fun/experience.

Tennis' minor league system is great. There should be more money in the Challengers and Futures, but overhauling the whole system is dumb. And I have no idea how limiting the number of players will make it easier for up and comers to rise. The opposite seems true.

Does anyone know how players don't earn prize money? Don't you earn money for playing a match?
