Because the Season is only 48 games, rookies can only play 6 games before a team has to decide if they stay or go back down.

Is it worth it for a team to keep a player on the roster and use up their 1st year of their EL contract on a shortened Season?

I'm interested in seeing how Grigs does in the NHL, but I don't think it would be wise for the Sabres to keep him on the roster.

I thought I read it was 5 games (i.e. on the 6th game, that burns the 1st year of the ELC). Either way, I think it depends on whether or not you think your team is a legit contender for the Cup as well as what is best regarding the player's development.

How many of these rookies do you see playing more than 6 games this Season?

The following underage juniors are likely to attend NHL camps for their respective teams: Dougie Hamilton (BOS), Mikhail Grigorenko (BUF), Ryan Murphy (CAR), Boone Jenner (CBJ), Brett Ritchie/Radek Faksa (DAL), Nail Yakupov (EDM), Jonathan Huberdeau (FLA), Matt Dumba (MIN), Alex Galchenyuk (MTL), Ryan Strome/Griffin Reinhart (NYI), Cody Ceci/Stefan Noesen (OTT), Scott Laughton (PHI), Morgan Rielly (TOR), Frank Corrado (VAN) and Mark Scheifele (WPG).

I've bolded the guys I think will stick with their NHL clubs, but it's just me guessing.

From a business point of view, I don't see it being worth it. Unless that player is what your team needs to put you over the hump, I don't see a team wanting to burn off the 1st year of their ELC on a short Season.

With the lack of a proper training camp before a Season normally starts, I feel most of these players would just be rushed into things too soon. Just my .02

That's pretty much how I feel about it, but it's going to be awfully hard to get a feel with such a short training camp and only a 6 game tryout period if a guy is likely to get you over the top.

Bottom line though, I'd rather make a push towards a Cup and use up a year of eligibility if that's what it takes.

I agree. Not only is a shortened season a waste in terms of losing one year of the entry level contract, but the player will gain less experience and develop less, which could make the second year of the entry level contract less productive.

i think the only way you do it is if you think he gives you a better shot at taking home the chalice.. if you're probably not a contender, i would send the guy back to juniors, its definitely not worth it then IMO
