Players remaining on PUP lists at the reduction to 53 players must remain on the list for their teams' first six games. They do not count against the 53-man roster limit during that time. After six games have passed, players on PUP have a three-week window to resume practicing. Once a player begins practicing within that window, the team has another three weeks to activate the player from the PUP list onto the 53-man roster.

In effect, a player on the PUP list at the reduction to 53 players could return after his team's sixth game or as long as six weeks after that. The NFL had discussed expanding the three-week window for practicing by two weeks. I'm checking on the status of that proposal, which would have required collaboration with the NFL Players Association.

So in effect the new CBA made it so that you could technically hold a guy on the PUP list for up to 12 weeks and he doesnt count towards the roster. I only bring this up because if reinstated, how many people want to bet Tanard Jackson will be retained and deemed "Not in Football shape" By wonder Mike and held in reserve until week six or later. The cap implications are virtually nil. And it would basically be a 12 week injury insurance policy at the Safety position.

Count Robinson as another one to start the season on the PUP list. Its a 3-5 month injury. Active PUP doesnt start until teams have to cutdown to 53, which this year is the end of August. So say Andrews comes back next week and does the Surgery straight away. August pretty gives him one month of recovery time, Active pup gives six weeks before he can start practicing. So thats 2.5 months Plus another 6 weeks after that for the Skins to make a solid call on if he gets activated. So total.. four months. If he heals fast he could be back and would only have missed 6-12 games.

I thought that once players started training camp, PUP was no longer an option? Otherwise, it wouldn't have been such a big story that RG3 was active from the get-go.

cant you bring back one guy from the IR too ? another call they may have

As long as that guy is the designated guy that can return from the IR, yes. You have to designate him that when he goes on the IR, and you can only use this once per season.

Two different PUP list rules.

training camp/pre season

A Player on this list still counts against a teams 90 man roster limit. He can not take part any practice or contact drills. He can only do rehab work. He can be taken off the PUP list at any time as long as he passes a physical. This then allows him to practice, participate in contact drills and preseason games. If a player has not been removed from this list by the 53 man cut down, he can be added to the Active season PUP

Active season PUP

Players on this list can not take part in practice or games for a minimum of six weeks, they will miss the first six weeks of the season and can only take part in rehab work during that time. During this time they do NOT take up a roster spot. At the start of week seven, these players must take a physical. If they pass they are able to practice, but the team has three weeks to determine if they are going to bring them to the active roster. During this time they can practice, but can not play in games unless they are added to the active roster.

Long and short, with the new rules change a team can keep a guy on the PUP list during the season almost into week 15.
