Since it's World Cup time in the United States, I'm gonna pose a What-If where CFB's national champion was decided by a World Cup style tournament, as opposed to the current mess of a system we have now. So first thing is first. Lettuce go over the ground rules for the season, the postseason, and then we'll unveil the new conference layout.
****Assume everything is starting with a fresh slate for the upcoming 2026 season and the college athletics powers that be, and their families, were forced at gunpoint to make these changes..............and they actually caved in and did the right thing for all of college athletics and agreed to these changes!!! ........................................here's how it would look:
2026-27 College Football Season-
- 11 game seasons with Week 1 starting the last week of August (8/29 this year); this year's regular season would run 12 weeks from 8/29 to 11/14
- Week 0 would now be a week earlier (8/22/26); no more than FOUR games to be played by Major conferences, no more than THREE games by Mid-Major conferences. All games must be neutral non-conference matchups
- There will now be 8 "power" conferences, now considered to be Major conferences, or more affectionately known as the "Big 8". There will be 6 Mid-Major conferences referred to as the "G6".
- The 8 Major conferences will be comprised of either 9 or 10 teams. The G6 conferences will vary in size from 9-12 based on regionality and conference fit.
- Schools will either play 8 or 9 conference games depending on the conference size, with the ultimate goal being to play every other team in the conference (with much fewer exceptions)
- For Major conference schools, they must schedule at least ONE other "Big 8" school in their non-conference every year (this will help to preserve non-conference rivalries)
- No more conference championship games, with the one exception being CUSA. The Army-Navy game will also take place on this Saturday (which would be 11/21 for the 2026 season)
- Every team will have one BYE week factored into their schedules. The week of the CUSA championship game and the Army-Navy game will serve as a BYE week between the regular season and postseason for all other teams
(Postseason):
- Under the World Cup format, 48 teams will qualify for this new postseason tournament
- All 14 conference champions automatically qualify; 34 other at-large bids will be determined based on a number of qualifiers and tiebreakers
- There will be 12 groups of 4 teams, paired randomly after the qualifying teams are divided into 4 tiers of 12. The top 12 teams (Tier 1) from the regular season will all be separated into their own pods/groups. There will also be ONE Tier 2, 3 and 4 team in each Group as well.
- Group Stage play will run for the next 3 weeks, from Black Friday (11/27/26) to mid-December (12/12/26).
.....- In this round robin format, each team will play 3 games within their Group
.....- The top 3 teams based on their tier rankings will host all teams in a given week once
.....- The intent is meant to allow teams the opportunity to host a postseason contest for that 12th game revenue that would otherwise be lost due to the reduction of games/weeks in the regular season, but also give incentive to teams EARNING the right to host a Group Stage game
.....- This also means the top 3 teams will play one home game, and 2 neutral games, while the Tier 4 team will have to play three road games
.....(Ex: Week 1- Team 4 at Team 1, Team 2 vs Team 3; Week 2- Team 4 at Team 2, Team 1 vs Team 3; Team 4 at Team 3, Team 1 vs Team 2)
.....- A win in Group Stage is worth 3 pts. A loss is (obviously) worth 0 pts. Any game that goes to Overtime automatically guarantees both teams at least 1 pt
.....- The top two teams in each group based on points, and various tiebreakers if needed, will advance to the 24-team Knockout Stage
- Knockout Stage play will begin the following week with eight Round of 24/First Round games (this year Thurs, 12/17 - Sat, 12/19)
.....- Knockout Stage is a straightforward 24-team single elimination playoff. No host games for this tournament.
.....- Top 8 teams based on tiebreakers will receive a bye into the Round of 16/Second Round
.....- Knockout Stage dates and venues:
.....- Round of 24 (Thurs, 12/17/26 - Sat, 12/19/26); Gator Bowl, ReliaQuest Bowl, Music City Bowl, Texas Bowl
.....- Round of 16 (Thurs, 12/24/26 - Sat, 12/26/26); Citrus Bowl, Alamo Bowl, Holiday Bowl (now at Levi Stadium in San Francisco), Las Vegas Bowl
.....- Quarterfinals (Fri, 1/1/27*), Rest week to follow; Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl
.....- Semifinals (Sat, 1/16/27); Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl
.....- NCG Cup Finals (Sat, 1/23/27); Las Vegas, NV in 2027
- The First and Second Rounds of the Knockout Stage will be played at four bowl game venues each week, hosting two playoff games over the course of that weekend, instead of just the one. This also allows for a few more bowl games for the teams that did not qualify for the Group Stage of the College Football Cup. (Ex: 9 Alabama vs 24 TCU / 16 South Florida vs 17 Boise State, both at the Gator Bowl that week), (1 Oregon vs 16 South Florida / 8 BYU vs 9 Alabama, both at the Holiday Bowl that week)
- Speaking of bowl games, minor bowls will still be played for non-Cup qualifying teams with bowl eligibility still at 6 wins, as that would now mean you finished your regular season ABOVE .500
