Blues defenseman Ian Cole has been suspended for three games for delivering an illegal check to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader during NHL Game #563 in Detroit on Saturday, Dec. 31, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced Sunday.

The incident occurred at 9:11 of the first period. A minor penalty for illegal check to the head was assessed on the play. Cole will miss games: Jan. 3 vs. Phoenix, Jan. 5 vs. Edmonton and Jan.7 vs. Colorado. He will be eligible to return Jan. 10 at Montreal.

KuklasKorner : The Malik Report : Blues’ Cole will sit three games for hitting Red Wings’ Justin Abdelkader in the head

Color me surprised. I thought at most he would be fined since this was his first offense and Abs came back and played.

No offense higgy but I hate that way of thinking the NHL should too. It shouldn't matter how bad the player is hurt or how long they will or will not be out. It should be based on the INFRACTION and not the result.

That's like the stupid rule for high sticking and checking the player to see if they're bleeding. How dumb is that? you can get smacked with a high sick and break your jaw and and not bleed it's a minor. You can high stick a player that has a pimple and he has blood on his face and it's a major that's screwed up.

No offense taken, because I totally agree. I know Shanny bases his suspensions on whether or not the player is injured on the play. I didn't say I agreed with it, just I know he takes into account if the player is hurt he usually suspends them longer, which is why I was so surprised he got 3 games being a first time offender.

I read other places that some dumb Blues fan morons thinks its because Shanny was a Red Wing. Apparently they are all too stupid to remember Shanny was a Blue before he was a Red Wing.

Nice, surprised Cole only got 2 minutes in game, but this seems fair. It was a really quick play but pretty dangerous.
