Stance: Goofy
Sent one to the Blue Jackets and one to the Senators. I introduced myself, explained that I grew up equidistant from DC and Philly and never had a hockey team of my own ('cept the Skipjacks before they left Baltimore too). I explained that if I was pressed on the question, I would probably have said I was a Flyers fan more than a Caps fan because I liked players like Kerr and Howe more than I liked guys like Pivonka and Ridley. Overall, though, I liked all teams. Except the Rangers.
I went on to explain that through a friend met online (on a Blue Jackets message board ironically) I began to explore the admiration I had for the Senators and began to count myself a fan. I appreciated the way they handled whiny superstars. I like how they fleeced the Isles in trades. Still, outside a good friend in the area and a few trips to OTT I had no connection to them. I explained how frustrating it gets to have opinions about the team and being told I essentially have no right to and that I should, perhaps, go fuck myself.
I explained I lived in Columbus now, and always liked the Jackets too, the way you like that 3 legged dog across the street. You want to see it do well, but mainly you feel sorry for it. I explained that I like hard nosed, all out effort hockey. I like teams that support goalies. I like grinders who have no fear. I like defensemen who can skate backwards. I hate leadership that stares into space during adversity. I always enjoy when some kid makes the most of his chance.
I laid it out. I am at a crossroads. These two teams were playing this year for my very affection.
The Jackets responded saying they had the same vision of the team and hoped that I would come out to a few games. I appreciated that, although Jeff Rimer standing outside my bedroom window with a boombox over his head playing "For those about to rock" got tiresome fast.
From the Sens, I got two opened and re-sealed packets of kool-aid and a handwritten note from Murray asking if I knew any agitators because "this team needs more toughness". And then he threatened to go to the media about me.
