Great deal to lock up Burns long term. Good cap hit too. Makes trading Setoguchi sting much less.

I agree with all but the cap hit. $5+ mil per year seems pretty high for him, but who knows. If they win it all at least once in that time, it's worth it.

I'm glad they signed him and I like the offensive numbers he put up but I am still a little nervous about the cap hit. Which could be because I haven't watched him play with San Jose yet.

Either way I am glad he is signed. I was skeptical trading that much for a player with only one year left on his deal.

Good for Burns. San Jose has to be the all-around best place to play in the league.

He's very good, but 5.75? Maybe I'm just a contract snob this year but I feel salaries are skyrocketing. Granted, the cap is also going up, but still.

I'm with you. I would put him in the $4.5 mil range. That $1 mil could be huge if they have to make a splash at the deadline.

Wisniewski-6 years/$33M
Burns-5 years/$28.8M
Ehrhoff-10 years/$40M
Brewer-4 years/$15.4M
Kaberle-3 years/$12.5M
Jovanovski-4 years/$16.5M

Some numbers from D-men who also got contracts this off-season. I think Burns should have been nothing more than a $5M cap hit.

With the exception of Ehrhoff, Burns is a lot, and I mean a lot, better than all those listed. Ehrhoff's deal is also a long term cap circumvention contract. If you look at the first 5 years of his deal he will make $30m. Best compairable out there for Burns is Brent Seabrook with Burns being a tiny bit better offensively and Seabrook defensively.

This deal is pretty much right on current market value.

That is all.
