One of the college sports radio show hosts on XM 91 threw out an idea that these schools/conferences should play in the spring or summer to grab an audience salivating for football. Currently there are no competitive sports for the summer.

That's not a bad idea, but either way they should do something, right now they are playing within a system they have no chance of winning a championship.

Not only that, but they will fail to remain solvent unless they do something to grab some revenue. More schools will end up like UAB unless they create a separate business model for themselves.

I tweeted that idea to the afternoon show when they had the president of Ohio U on as a guest (not sure if it was the same show you heard BB) Dunno if Jack Arute had it on his agenda already or not but either way he poses the question/idea to their president and their president sounded like he may be receptive to something like that, at least that was the impression I got. I posted it on the main board here on the hoop in the off season too and it got mixed reviews.

If they were to begin their season the weekend after March madness and play into the summer I see a ton of benefits by them moving to the spring. JMO but I think they would get far more exposure from TV could get a better TV deal than they have now plus all these conference networks need programming, why not a CFB game in the spring when CFB is obviously a hot item for TV these days? I think they get more people in the stadium that ordinarily would be going to a P5 game in the fall and prob gain more fans overall.
Just using WV as an example, I am certain that Marshall would have better crowds when they weren't competing with WVU in the fall for in state fans. Many support both anyway but give priority to WVU, that changes if there is no more CFB until September. My guess is the non P5's would get similar results in places like Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio ect. As well.
I know this, I love a CFB game regardless if they are P5 or not but there simply just isn't enough time in the fall to take all of it in with so many side shows and results from other teams/conferences effecting my team to keep up with. As a CFB fan first I'm begging these guys to play in the spring, they have me already, they just need to play when I can watch and support them.

Right now, many of these schools will be losing their gravy train. As P5 teams stop giving out paydays to these teams, they will lose 50-100 million per year. There will be a ripple effect and many programs will just drop football along with other sports that are supported by football revenue.

It is an interesting concept, but would it really go? Would you be able to convince kids to play football in the spring/summer? Would the TV money be better, or would it be viewed as strictly bush league filler?

Very good point....moving to the spring would cut off games that a lot of these programs survive on. Revenue might not be there just playing in this type of league for some to make it.

Also, in smaller schools, there are kids who play baseball as well as football. The next few years are going to be interesting in the world of CFB, it aint the sport we grew up with anymore.

Play em, instead of a spring game that is an inter squad practice it can be an actual spring game vs another live team. That's being tossed around anyway.

And DAD the kids go year round now anyway in one form or another. HS has the camp circuit, CFB has the spring practices and games.

Their revenue stream from the P5 may take a major hit in the near future if college football continues to use a playoff committee to assess teams for inclusion.

As has been debated on this board, some are demanding to see P5 schools face each other more. This will drive the Group of 5 schools out even more should this develop in the future.

I was in the move when a typed this ( never know what my big ol fingers and auto correct are going to produce next on this phone) so let me be clear, I was meaning the non P5 playing a P5 for the payday. It can still happen , just play the game in the spring. One needs the money and the other needs a spring scrimmage/ or in this case a actual game. They are both practicing at that time of year anyway so...

There is also the NFL draft issue but most times a kid has a good idea if he has a shot at the pros by his Jr. year. He can skip the season and go to the combine ect..
In fact, it could be an advantage because with just a tweak of the rules he could still be eligible for college ball should he not get drafted or make a team.
