The JMFJ Effect - Battle of California

I have talked many times of my hatred for Jack Johnson. Many, many times. Basically, I don't like him because he doesn't do anything to positively affect a play when he's on defense; he's generally in the right place but he's not actively doing the things he needs to do to end that offensive possession. He's a buck-toothed pylon, basically.

I don't want to belabor the point and I've actually gotten past the whole "I hate Jack Johnson on a personal level" thing

I thought this was pretty funny considering the post you put up Puck. He seems 'over it' like I used to get over being dumped in high school.

I can actually see where he's coming from. I started hated him because he was such a massive tool at the WJHC. Then the damage he and Doughty did in the series vs Van a couple of years ago heightened it a bit (exclusively on the powerplay, but it was almost enough).

Then I started paying attention to his shifts, and basically took joy in realizing he was fucking horrible most of the time.
So while I DO hate him, quite separate from that - is the fact that he's just a not very good defenseman.
And I'm kind of glad I'm no longer an army of one with that opinion.

You were never alone on that one PH. So far in his career he has shown nothing but a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness (he can play a lot of minutes).

I just don't think I've ever seen him play a REALLY good game.

I've seen him play many bad ones.

Those numbers are interesting. I have to think it over to see if I can find any issues with it. Part of me wants to claim that the decline in numbers are correlation and not causality but the fact that every other defenseman he's pared with have worse numbers than they do when otherwies is hard to ignore.

Off the top of my head he has good PP and offensive numbers so you could argue that he is primarily an offensive defenseman. There are several guys that are glorified forwards who have poor defensive stats (hello MA Bergeron).

I can agree with you that he is overrated, however I am not sure if I am ready to label him garbage yet.

Every team needs a designated whipping boy, it's just a shame when the whipping boy comes along with a huge cap hit...

I think JJ is basically going to end up being known as Bryan McCabe, only with the ability to skate backwards.
