I have heard that kuch is an asshole from one source. That was a bit surprising with his golly gee image. Seems like the guy who everybody likes

I rarely believe one source without some reservations. When the rumors start piling up though....

The caddie asked for 50 grand which is less than 5% of the Kuch's winnings.
A very respectable request.

What makes this look so bad is Kuchar could've paid him $50k easily and still saved $50k+ over what a regular caddy would typically get for a win.

I think the caddie was foolish for not accepting the additional money offered, but it's pretty clear that Kuchar felt like he was going by their agreement with the initial $5k, but "unspecified % of winnings" was only $2k more ?

C'mon Kuchar!!! Pretty piss poor for a guy that's probably makes $50k a week from Sketchers alone!

1) pay the guy $50,000 Matt. You won 1.2 million and the guy obviously had some course knowledge

2) the caddie can’t speak English? I read he needed a translator so unless Kuch speaks fluent Spanish — this would be a big communication gap for player and caddie. So I’m wondering how this worked so well for Kuch unless the guy just only carried the bag... which would make sense why he low balled him. Hell maybe he almost costed Kuch the tourney who knows

I don’t like to stereotype but most of the Mexicans I know are very proud people.
This decision by the caddie does not surprise me at all.

I work with a Mexican and I can relate to that, but in this case with an agreement in place and getting another $15k offered was not a gesture worthy of snubbing your nose at...$20k for a week! that's a healthy % of what he will earn for the yr...I'll bet his wife was pissed!

Matt Kuchar somehow defended his embarrassingly low payment to caddie after $1.2M win

Well - you would think that after this came out that Kuchar would fix this if for no other reason than to repair his reputation. Apparently not - he is doubling down on this shit & it really makes him look bad.

Good Lord - man up - toss the guy $50K or so & just say that you screwed up. Pretty sure that the PR hit is going to cost him more than that. Like it mentioned in the article - I guess that some rich folks just think that they can act like this & basically never feel bad about it.

Somehow I get the feeling that he will recoup the $15k & then some. Somebody or some fund will provide him with that money as a result of this story.

"Kuchar said he told Ortiz he would pay him $1,000 if he missed the cut, $2,000 if he made the cut, $3,000 if he had a top-20 and $4,000 if he had a top-10. “The extra $1,000 was, ‘Thank you — it was a great week.’ Those were the terms. He was in agreement with those terms. That’s where I struggle. I don’t know what happened. Someone must have said, `You need much more.’”

It really looks bad and yet Kuchar paid they guy 20% over the agreed amount.
He would have gotten a hell alot more from me. But yet, ...that was the agreement.

2 guys had an agreement, Kuchar went beyond the agreement but he will get roasted here
because this will be taken over by the social justice world.

Kuchar stood by his $5k as being fair...and according to the agreement it was very fair....why cave after the guy complained offered more?...the power of the media.

He felt some level of remorse I think and tried to make it right in the eyes of the media imo.

It's not that simple.

Say you hired a laborer to clean your yard and you both agreed on 50 bucks.
The you see your neighbor talking to him, telling him he should be getting $500

And then all of your other neighbors stating calling you asking what are you going to do about it.

How fucking pissed off would you be?

This is Mexico.

What is the normal rate for a temp caddie in a tournament like this?

What have the other Pro's been paying?

We need to see some context.

On principle...Kuchar is right, but he clearly felt remorse after learning that it got out. It just wasn't enough to make this go away...bottomline it wasn't what the guy wanted so he made Kuch look bad by rejecting it.

I still say he was sort of an ass as well here.
