Gents, I need some advice.

I'm a complete beginner who's been living in the big city and in California for the last 20 yrs but am back in middle Tennessee and would love to do some squirrel hunting again.

Where do I start? Get a .410 or a .22 and join a club or what? :noidea:

Get a .22 and put a small scope on it with the money you save from buying .410 shells. Best thing my dad ever did for hunting squirrels.

I'd agree that a scoped .22 would be a fine choice.

I haven't hunted squirrels in years but I do recall that the little fellers that run around yards robbing feeders are almost a different species from the ones you find in the deep woods where they have to watch their asses from the predators.

I did see a cool tip though in FFG magazine. Squirrels will round a tree trunk to hide when they notice your presence so what this one dude does is carry a carpenter's chalk line with him. When he has one treed, he ties off the string to a sapling on one side of the tree. Then he goes around to the other side and sits a for a few minutes. A few pulls of the string and the moving bush makes the squirrel come around to his side of the tree where he picks 'em off! Never tried it but I bet it'd work really well.

Haven't had to buy any .22 shells in a long time but they are cheaper than .410 shells which can be hard to find at times. Mostly all you see is 12 and 20 gauge shells, no 16 or 28 gauge shells found at Walmart anymore.

Just got up to my grandpa's house up in northeastern Nebraska...rifle season opens tomorrow morning. My brother and I were just going through the pics from the trail cam over the last few days and there are probably 2-3 HUGE ones on our property. Can't wait to get out tomorrow morning but it is gonna be COLD.

I would agree and would say that they are better than the .22 as far as they don't ruin as much of the meat. I have a .177 that is 1100 FPS and it kills them with one shot 90% of the time. A buddy of mine that I hunt with has a .22 that you charge off of a scuba tank and it fires at around 1000 FPS. That damn thing is awesome. It literally knocks the squirrel out of the tree when it hits them. They dead.

I had my .22 scoped to begin with, but what I found, with squirrels, is it's hard to follow them through the tree. It's great, if the squirrel stops and you can throw the gun up and shot right then, but more times than not, the rat is moving through the tree, stopping for short periods before moving again. Anyway, I'd suggest learning to shot with the sights on the gun, so that you can track the squirrel the entire time. He never leaves your FOV.

Some photos from my stand this morning...saw a few early on, and then the wind came up and it started snowing and they quit moving.

oak, here's a tip. You should hang stands next to deer trails.

Lol...do they have to pay tolls to use those?

Good luck this season~

Thanks Edisto...never weighed it but prolly about mid thirties.
