How much better would our team be if we had James Loney at first base and Marlon Byrd in left field? Loney and Byrd are two guys who are on teams that will be sellers at the deadliine. Byrd would be a very solid upgrade over Ackley. Loney over Smoak? Meh, the difference may not be that wide when you take everything (defense, power, OBP) into consideration.

When we criticize upper management for not making moves to improve the team, we first have to consider what is truly available, and right now that ain't much. There are only six teams right now that can be considered sellers at the deadline: Tampa Bay, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago Cubs, San Diego and Arizona. Looking at the rosters of those teams, I've compiled a list of position players who are probably available and may be able to improve the Mariners.

1. James Loney.

What about this organization makes you think ANY of those guys would hit anywhere near their career averages with the Mariners?

Well, if we are guaging future expectations off of pastt results then clearly they will not hit at their career averages. I take that into account and I think most people who post regularly in here do also. But I still think all of these guys would be an upgrade over Ackely, or Smoak or our DH-by-committee. Getting them to outperform the incumbents is not the problem. Getting management to invest in one or more of them is the problem.

Loney was my second choice this off season after Napoli for 1B. He reminds me a lot of Olerud in his production style.

I'm a big fan of Zobrist's, although he hasn't been as good this year as in the past. He plays SS, 2B and OF and I believe he plays them all well. He could start in place of any of our problem spots and should be an upgrade (don't know how much 1B he's played, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was very good at it).
I'm assuming the splits you are showing are this year's as Ben's RH split for his career is significantly better than that.

MLBTR has a lot of rumors about help possibly coming.

They mentioned Butler, rumors that we're one of 2 teams set to sign Cuban OF Daniel Carbonell, whether he'll be good or not is still unknown, and we'll see soon about Morales.

Can you imagine striking gold with Carbonell like Chicago, LA, and Oakland have done with their Cuban OFs?

More importantly though, this team would get a real big boost if Cano would finally get into that power streak everyone says is coming.

Butler is only 28 years old. He should be entering the prime years of his career. Instead, he is fading fast. This dude comes with a shit load of red flags. After four straight years of an OPS of .820 or higher, he slipped to .787 last year and this year he is sitting at a paltry .612. The fact that KC is only 2.5 games back in the wild card and they are still wanting to unload Butler speaks volumes to their lack of confidence in him.

I repeat again, Josh Willingham over Butler for me. Butler has dropped like above post says. He brings nothing else like speed, power, or defense so if the bat ain't hot he gives you nothing.

I mentioned an Ackley for D. Brown deal then I was watching the Phils play yesterday and another guy to target for a cheap team, Mariners, would also be an ex draft pick in Mayberry Jr. Add them both for chap and both have plus power.

Twins are only 2.5 out of the wild card. They probably haven't thrown the towel in yet. He'll probably alot cheaper 6 weeks from now. Then again, 6 weeks from now may be too late for a team like the Ms who are barely treading water with their lame offfense.

Mayberry would be a great platoon guy. He has a ccareeer .857 OPS against LH pitching. Of course Jack would give up too much for him. Instead of sending someone like Andrew Carraway or Whathisface Kensing, he'd send Abraham Almonte and Carson Smith.

Sad, but true once again.
